    DVD read/writer for Sufrace Book

I recently purchased a Surface Book and I am pleased with it. A little different but OK. I would like to purchase a DVD read/writer for the Book. I purchased one from a local PC store plugged it in and it would not work. It seem the USB port does not put out 5 VDC and whatever is there will not power the DVD player. I tried it on my laptop and Book but neither would work. the PC store manager explained that some PC and tablets/Books do not put 5VDC to the USB ports.
He was happy to give me a refund but I still want a DVD player. I know I could get a DVD player with an external power source but I hope that is not the answer. I could load my DVD disks to the Cloud and the do what I needed to do from the Cloud but I think that is a long way around the barn! I have search the net but to no definitive answer. I hate to buy and return.
Does the forum have any experience with DVD players for a Surface Book?
    Many thanks for your time.

Try the USB settings in BIOS. Set them auto.
