    USB flash drive

    Hello,

I just purchased a PNY USB flash drive. After connecting it to my PC, I noticed there is 34mb of unallocated space on it. Can anyone explain the reason for this? Please see screen shot below.

If I want to allocate this 34mb space and make the USB flash drive have one space instead of two spaces, how do I do so and is this recommended?

It is space reserved for when memory areas on the drive start to go bad and the system needs to move data out of those areas. Same reason a hard rive has a amount of reserved space.

That is not true. All my internal hard drives have all allocated space by creating a new volume.

I don't thing you can configure an internal hard drive with unallocated space.

Are you recommending to leave the unallocated space as is? What would be wrong if I created a new volume?

Would it require a format or changing the file system?

Partition Magic Freeware to manage Disk Partitions (with portable versions available)

Use the above freeware to create a new volume in the unallocated space, and then combine the two volumes.

Look at Disk 1 below. The second (8.007 GB) and third (8.000 MB) volumes have been combined into one (8.015 GB). The Windows ISO file in the second volume remains unchanged, while the files in the third one have been moved into the second one.

Why would you need to create a new volume and then combine the two volumes? Why not just extend the existing partition into the unallocated space? Right click on the existing partition, select resize/move, drag the left edge of the existing partition to fill the entire drive, click apply.

One thing I notice is that the existing partition is a 230 GB FAT32 - so there has been a third party partitioning program used on this drive before.

Did the 260GB USB drive came formatted as Fat32?

As it is still empty and the unallocated space is on the left side, delete the Fat32 partition and create a new one (my suggestion is to use NTFS)
It can be done with Disk manager (C:\Windows\System32\diskmgmt.msc)
