i am still having the same problem with the microphone reverting to a muted state after restart.
the thing is there are 2 microphone drivers (for some reason),when i unmute the muted mic driver i can make a sound and i see that it is recognized but not by the driver i just unmuted.

Have same type issue, on Insider slow ring Win 10 Pro 14965.1001 , now mic mutes itself after about 30 second of working. If I got in and reset it to ON and raise level to 80-100 it works for about 30 seconds and I can sit here and watch it click off by itself. Never done this before

Mic is on a Dell S2340T monitor with built in mic. When it worked it worked very well, quite sensitive can hear from across room.

Same issue on my PC running WIndows 10 Home 14393.447. I've tried disabling anything that could potentially be accessing mic settings but the mic still sets to 0 at seemingly random intervals. I can actually keep the levels tab open and watch it jump from 100 to 0 and mute. Would love to know what's the cause.

Same issue. Windows 10 mutes the microphone only for Google Hangouts.
I found it muted when I go to Sounds and I unmute but still doesn't work.

Troubleshooted from the sound icon and the mute issue didn't even come up as an issue.

Searched on microphone in search and then troubleshooted it from there (the troubleshooting looked different from there) and it came up that the microphone had been muted and was fixed. And guess what? I could use my microphone again.

I have found it will just mute itself again for no reason that I can find out.

This one has been driving me crazy on my Windows 10 Pro 1703 desktop PC (X64), so I'm happy to report the resolution that has worked for me so far. I do not take any credit for this fix and give a big thanks to the solver located at this "youtube" video location (Microphone Keeps Muting Itself In Windows 10 - FIXED - YouTube).

In my case I had only one instance of "svchost.exe" that referenced the name of my PC. After killing this from the command line, I downloaded and installed and ran the free version of Malwarebytes. I was surprised to see my machine was infected and let the software quarantine the junk.

After rebooting I noted the task manager showed several instances of "svchost. exe" running and referencing my machine name (not just the one instance as before) and this is evidently a normal condition. Running Malwarebytes again showed no infections or Trojans detected. Now my external USB "CAD U7 Microphone" works perfectly with Cortana. A working, responsive Cortana really makes Windows 10 a lot more fun and useful IMHO.

Kudos to the guy in the video.

Mic mute and sets to 0

I FIXED it!! It is in Windows 10 speech recognition settings. It needs to be set to your audio device. Mine is an Asus Xonar. Path.
Control Panel\Ease of Access\Speech Recognition. At the bottom is Advanced. Than you will see Audio Input Devices.
    Use this. Select. Done.
