    I have one of these in my kit for recovery from all types of drives, http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16812232002 I also have one similar to this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-542-_-Product that came with a cloning kit. The second one will work on most drives. If the drive is power hungry its iffy though. Plugged into a USB 2 port it is anyway.

    Wynona, Yes you can do that provided your laptop can boot from USB. USB3 and eSata are of course the faster options. USB2 may be a bit slow.

    That cable is a good alternative at a reasonable price.

    It works almost all the time. For laptop drives its not an issue. Full sized spinner SATA drives are the iffy ones. I had one that just would not spin up and work without a dedicated power input. The first kit I linked to. I keep the cable in my laptop bag with a small Philips screw driver. It's come in handy a few times recovering files.

    The description says it is for 2.5" drives, so if you use a 3.5" drive it's a good bet that it won't work. In fact, I'd be surprised if it works with any 3.5 inch drives because they generally require both 5vdc and 12vdc, the USB port can only supply 5vdc.

    That may be it, I don't remember now. It was a while ago. When it wouldn't work I just pulled out my full kit with the power pack.
