    No more updates

I feel like Windows 10 is stuffed at my end.

USB drives fail to get recognised by the OS. But I can connect portable devices, like a camera for example.

Compared to Win 7, Win 10 has been a nuisance.

I get this error every time I attempt to install an update: 0x80071160

Check the first 10-15 search results, as well as mentions through various channels, and I'm fairly sure I've tried them all.

The HDD is barely a year old. I need to transfer some files to a USB sooner than later. It's inconvenient in my opinion. I did a system check, and whatever. But I am not adept at salvaging stuff from HDDs remotely. If I reinstall Win 10, then I risk losing important files if something goes wrong.

    And for what it's worth, it's version 22H2 19045.3393

Then to help yourself avoid clean installing and give yourself a second chance in many cases- even if your disk failed or your PC was stolen- I hope you are routinely and regularly using 3rd party disk imaging to external storage, as is endlessy recommended here.

If you wish to you can try:
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10
and a clean boot and then attempt the update.

I assume the update is offered by Windows Update ( you haven't said specifically).

Note that an in-place upgrade repair install - like any major Windows upgrade - it uses the same mechanism- keeps all programs and data and most settings.

You don't say which update is failing- the error code is not one I immediately recognise.

According to a tech, the USB 'dongle' is to blame. But unfortunately, I can't recall what he said in regards to which one to replace it with. I am sick of replacing these USB adapters only to find the next one cuts out frequently.

Are there any USB adapters priced at under about $60 USD which will actually permit Win 10 to be able to update? From what I recall, he said something about ethernet, which I am totally clueless about.

Got this to replace the tiny USB adapter I had previously. But the connection is still dropping out. Updates are still out of the question.

I assume I need to pay at least $2000 to get an adapter that can perform the same tasks that were possible 18 months ago, with a 15 dollar 'dongle'.
