No sound from headphones but speakers work.

    Hello,

    I have a laptop - Asus GL551JW-DS71.

My speakers work fine but when I plug in my headphones, I can't hear any sound from the headphones. The headphones do work as I use them for my desktop.

I have tried updating the sound drivers from the device manager.
I have tried removing the drivers and redownloading the audio drivers from Acers website.
I have tried 'installing' audio driver with the default windows 10 audio driver instead of the realtek one.
I have tried adjusting the sample rate in the advanced properties tab.

What can I do to get sound working in my headphones again and not just the speakers.

Hi, what sort of headphones are they? Plain ordinary analogue.. USB..?
Do they require a driver? If so, is it installed ok?

There are several threads about headphone issues on this forum, so suggest you also try searching the forum for 'headphones'. May give you a clue.

Solved Cannot connect to bluetooth headphones after upgrade to Win10 - Windows 10 Forums

Thanks Dalchina. They are Bose Headphones that use a plain ordinary analogue, not USB. They do not require a driver.

I had spent over 3 hours searching for a solution before I had posted here. 90% of them were marked as resolved simply by updating the sound driver from the device manager then rebooting the computer. As I said, I have tried this, multiple times and it was still not resolved.

Ok, can you confirm your speakers mute when you plug in your headphones?
(I'm assuming you're referring to your laptop speakers not sthg else.. please confirm).

    Ok, try this:
no headphones in sound upgraded to win10 gl551jw

    - this is specific to your laptop and apparently worked for those users.

Aha, it works! Thanks so much for your time :)

What I had to do was uninstall the drivers and then reinstall the realtek drivers in compatibility mode (windows 7) and run as admin.

If appears your product was released with Win 7 x64.

    HP says:
Windows 10 drivers may be available through Windows Update
Click 'Learn More' below for steps on using Windows Update to determine what drivers might be available for your product. Please be aware that HP does not guarantee Windows 10 drivers will be available from Windows Update.

although Win 8 drivers appear available.

Can you state if you have just upgraded to Win 10, or have you been running Win 10 satisfactorily and now have a problem? Clarity is good.

Can you confirm Device Manager shows all drivers installed (no yellow exclamation marks)?

Have you tried rt clicking the volume icon, and clicking Troubleshoot?

Can you try downloading a version of your audio driver that worked previously, disconnect the internet to stop it being replaced, installing it (in compatibility mode if necessary?

Plug in the headphones. Click on the start icon and start type "sound". Open the sound control panel that appears at the top of the list. Do you have an entry in the list of sound devices that looks like it would be for the headphones?
