Does the volume icon look like a small white loudspeaker?
Please rt click it and click Open Volume Mixer, can you post a screenshot of that?
Have you tried rt clicking the volume icon, and clicking Troubleshoot?
Can you try downloading a version of your audio driver that worked previously, disconnect the internet to stop it being replaced, installing it (in compatibility mode if necessary?
It's still quite hit and miss with mine. 80% of the time it works but the time it doesn't I just reset laptop with headphones plugged in and it works. Normally the issue arises when I plug/unplug while win10 is booted. Which is strange because just uses a normal headphone jack with no drivers so there shouldn't be plug and play issues.
It happened with me as well, but troubleshoot worked for me, you can also do that for your audio driver.

I have the same problem with my new HP running Windows 10. I plug in the headphones or earbuds but no sound, the sound continues to come through the speakers. I also updated the driver but when you open 'Sound' only the speakers are shown. The headphones/earbuds doe not appear so I can not set them as the default. Any ideas on how to make the headphones/earbuds appear in the window?
