If you have ANOTHER computer simply try plugging in the SSD to a USB port via a USB==>SATA cable -- very cheap -- and see if the SSD can be read. That will tell you simply and easily if the SSD is defective.

SATA controllers on Mobos don't Break very often (unless you've been forcing cables in the wrong way or something like that).

As far as CMOS batteries are concerned they should normally last for about the lifetime of the computer --certainly 5 years is not unusual. A sign that the CMOS battery is going is usually when the BIOS doesn't retain settings after a power off (especially the clock time).
