Windows 10 not letting me access advanced mouse settings

So, I recently upgraded to windows 10, and I was trying to change some settings to do with my mouse, and when I tried to open the additional mouse options: settings>devices>Mouse & Touchpad, but whenever I click "addition mouse options" an error comes up saying "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them" however, I have administrator access on my computer, so I was wondering if anybody had a fix for it.

EDIT: This was working before I upgraded to windows 10 (I was on windows 7)

Hello Churchy832 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

I could suspect this to be a result of the upgrade from 7 ending up being "Buggy" but I will hold off on that for the time being since you may only need to elevate the status of your user account. What has been seen about 66% or more of the time however with 7 to 10 upgrades is problems of various types!

What you could be seeing there however is the lack of a mouse driver or app suitable for 10 being the actual problem leaving the mouse there running with generic drivers included with 10 and not factory drivers preventing you from getting into the settings if that particular mouse came with a software disk?

If you have a programmable model the app would be what to open to change any settings while with a standard optical mouse you would see the left and right click options, click speed, wheel button option often mouse 3, pointer options, etc. Either the mouse isn't being properly detected or the upgrade may have a problem.

One fast option would be running the SFC tool just to see if that needs to replace any system files that didn't go on fully during the upgrade install. In the Device Manage when looking under "Mouse and Other pointing devices" you can right click on the HD compliant item to select the upgrade driver option to see if 10 will replace what it is using at the present time with the correct driver if the mouse requires one.

I know some people have access problems with regards to file access, but I have never heard of anyone, who got an error while navigating inside the control panel and this error then was based on wrong file permissions.

Are we speaking about your Touchpad? Or about an external mouse?

Please have a look inside the Device Manager: What make and model is is it? And: Who is the manufacturer of the driver and what is the driver version, which you are using for this hardware?

Churchy832 has a separate mouse from the description provided but should fill in more details as far as is the mouse a programmable or non programmable model and whether or not a software disk came with it for seeing the correct driver and app installed. If that is case a trip to the manufacturer's support site to look for at least an 8.1 update if not finding one for 10 would be advised. 10 will often pick and choose the 8.1 flavor since 3rd parties still need to play catch up with the new version as always! if they are not simply dropping any continued support in favor the latest line of products out that is.
