Yep, would not fix it no matter what i tried, repair disc, refresh, system restore. Was wrong Controller drivers in wrong place...oops at the time, my bad.
But you're NOT talking about a complete disk image restore performed booting from a WInPE or other restore environment that boots completely from within itself and is NOT dependent whatsoever on the state of drivers or other data on the disk to be restored to and is only dependent on the BIOS being functional to boot the restore environment from... RIGHT?

I ask because, if OldMike doesn't mind me chiming in here, that's exactly the kind of restore OldMike is talking about. Even if Gary is reduced to a trial and error approach on drivers, a reliable restore method is all Gary needs to get his you know what out of the wringer.

EDIT: Well 2nd paragraph above came in behind OldMike, but I think we're on the same page with this.

Well if you did a clean install then you must have had access to either your DVD or USB drive! Which is why I questioned that in the 1st place. As long as we can access our dvd or a usb port, then we can install the image backup from a 2nd drive or external drive.

Yeah, i bit the bullet did a clean install, which i have done many times in certain situations. Not much on system image software even though they are recommended. I just first tried to repair my install if i could would not go past the boot even though i was able to boot to the CD.Awhile back was trying to recall details, but just an example of how putting in wrong drivers can do something like this.
So no need to go back to drinking for yourself,

LOL! I've just been lurking and following closely and thought it might help to state the case a little differently, not necessarily "better". With a good tool in hand like Macrium, or any other reliable software, Gary can run through all the options in his driver hunt fearlessly, as long as he's got the inclination and the time to reverse the errors.

Yup I knew it.....you had to be able to use your DVD or USB and YOU should make image backups, and use Macrium Reflect free version jds63 it works really well, and make a bootable cd/dvd disk after you install it to your hard drive, then 1st thing u do is make your recovery disk using MR and your butt is covered for anything. :)
