This would still be applicable to Win 10: Start> In search box type services.msc> Enter> Scroll down to Shell Hardware Detection, and make sure that it is Running, and the Startup Type is set to Automatic. If not, start the service and change the Startup Type.

(I also came across this: Microsoft AutoPlay Repair Wizard - Download - no idea as to its reliability, efficacy or anything. There used to be a MS tool to repair Autoplay for XP.. could be that although this says Win 10.. hmm

    Also this older article:
    Repair the autoplay feature
    )

One of the first thing I checked was the SHD service.
I'll see if the Wizard works on Win10.

I still feel this is a Win10 issue. I remember when I got a new Dell with Win8 and it would not go into sleep mode properly. This forum was full of threads regarding this. Win8.5 solved the problem.

Maybe- it works for me once I had fixed it a long time back..

Noting for you it's just the CD-DVD drive, try this older article where applicable, taking appropriate precautions (e.g. back up registry, set a system restore point...).

    Dalchina, I've tried it all.
Thx for your support, but I'm looking for something beyond the obvious 'fixes.'

What is autoplay for your CD-DVD drive set to do?
In Win 10 by default there is no software to play such a disk.
(Of course there are other autoplay options...)
    Is that a useful clue?

Otherwise guess you're into comparing registry entries with a working PC.. good luck

    Take one working PC.
    Install & run regshot (freeware)
    Create shot 1
    Make changes to Autoplay settings
    Create shot 2
Inspect relevant registry keys & values & compare with your PC.

or you could (random idea) try an in-place upgrade install (see Tutorials).
depends if it overwrites the relevant duff registry entries or keeps them as settings which should be kept.

dalchina, I'm working directly with MS support. The video I sent them has raised an eyebrow, so I'm following directions on clean booting to see what happens:
Can you try a "clean boot" and see if the issue resolves:

Hi, My parents have a one week old Dell laptop with Win 10 Home and it it doing this exact same thing. Dell is absolutely no help! Been on phone with them for hours and the last response I got was CD's are going obsolete so that's probably why it doesn't autoplay with them! Please keep us posted with Microsoft updates, I really do think this is a Windows issue not a hardware problem.

By the way I did try the clean boot and still no worky...... Hopefully we can get this sorted out soon.

Pretty sure you'll find you need to do a registry fix.
    Dell's response doesn't deserve comment.
Autoplay working fine on my 2 laptops.. only had to fix it once many months ago.

Question is, what breaks it in Win 10 for a few people? But that's an as yet unanswerable question for some of the bigger relatively common issues too.

Here's something interesting. If I restart the computer, the first time i put a disc in the drive it works as you would expect it to, depending on your autoplay settings. But anytime after that first time it just does nothing until you try to read from the drive in File Explorer. If you double click the D:/ drive icon it will spin up the drive and display the contents of that new disc I put in. Sometimes when it does that autoplay will pop up also but not always.

So maybe it's a problem with Explorer not refreshing and not so much with autoplay???

Hi, so I get 'tap to choose what happens' (= undefined) every time I insert an audio CD.
So I do that and choose a player (Zoom player)- which opens, but nothing plays.
I try inserting the CD again, the program (Zoom player, which is capable of playing audio disks) opens but nothing is played. (Noted also it could not be closed using the title bar x as usual- odd).

Wanting to change the default, I found nothing in Settings that would help, and no link to the Control Panel options. Have I missed that?

So I change the CD defaults in CP to open other programs.

Now inserting the disk, it plays - every time.

    That's my experience, FWIW...!
