    Change 'Device not recognised' timeout?


    I have several external USB3 drives, mains AC powered, which I use regularly; there are not enough USB ports on my PC to plug them all in directly, (and the access to the USB ports is impossible anyway without my shifting furniture every time), so I connect them via a hub, which is also mains AC powered.

    When I want to use one of the drives, turning on its mains supply, then pressing its switch on the hub (which is individually switched for each port), I am invariably informed, after several seconds, that Windows (10 Pro) has not recognised the device. After a little longer however, it usually shows up OK in the 'This PC' window...

    Been trying to find an entry in the registry that will extend the time before the 'Device not recognised' message comes up, but so far (Googling, searching the registry) but no luck.. anyone able to help with that please?

    It appears File Explorer is taking a bit of time in recognizing the thumb drives but that can happen with hubs/extensions which have to first be recognized then the drive recognized. Have you tried your exactly same procedure with a free file manager such as Free Commander, MultiCommander, etc.? More listed on MajorGeeks.Com - MajorGeeks.

    Hi. I don't want to change file managers, was just wondering if I can change the default timeout in the registry. I know I once did a similar thing to change the timeout for a programme 'not responding' message, but haven't yet found anything yet. May be necessary to create new DWord??

    I didn't suggest a change, only that using a different program is always a part of diagnosing problems as long as one's mind is open to doing so.

    I think we are at crossed purposes. My query isn't about transferring or managing files (I have used TeraCopy for many years). It's simply about tweaking how long Windows waits before telling me that a USB drive I connect is not recognised: if I ignore the notice and wait another five seconds or so the drive appears in 'This PC', along with my internal drives.

    Thanks.. I will have another search meanwhile; I don't know, as I say, whether the timeout is governed by an existing registry entry or not. There is (or you can create, I can't recall which) an entry for specifying how long Windows waits before telling you that a programme is not responding, for instance. This would be similar.

    Hi. Thanks, but no, that's not what I was asking I'm afraid.

    I honestly can't see how to make my question any clearer, so I guess I'll just have to draw a line under this for now.
