HP Scanner 2400 (old) Not Scanning

    Windows 10..0.0.19045 build 19045

    I scan maybe 3 documents a year.
Window FAX and Scan has always worked (wish it saved files to PDF though).
Device Manager indicates scanner is OK.
Showing two DIFFERENT scan software on my system, all which don't work.
    (1)
Windows FAX and Scan comes up.
PROBLEM >> New Scan hangs. Tried multiple reboots and problems persists.

    (2)
SCAN. Where this came from is unknown, but showing as Microsoft.
    Appears to work and hangs.
This has an option to scan to PDF, which I need, so preferred option if can get up and going.

    Any suggestions appreciated.
    THANKS

    Hello @dw85745,

Have you tried running the Troubleshooter ?:

    > Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners > Run the Troubleshooter

HP Scanner 2400 (old) Not Scanning-image.png

For further information on the Scanner,

Copy & Paste the following commands [ ALL at once ] into PS ISE and press F5.

    Code:

    Get-PnPDevice | Where-Object {$_.Class -Like '*Image*'} | Sort-Object -Property {$_.Class, $_.Name} | Format-List | Out-String -Width 1000
    Get-CimInstance Win32_PnPSignedDriver | Where-Object {$_.DeviceClass -Like '*Image*'} | Sort-Object -Property {$_.DeviceClass, $_.FriendlyName} | Format-List | Out-String -Width 1000

Usually, the Scanner includes the word Image, hence my use of it in the above commands.

The FIRST command is for the Scanner, and the SECOND command is for the Scanner Drivers. It might help with diagnostics !

The above is an extract from my PROJECT: Computer Report - Comprehensive in my signature.

    I hope this helps.

The scanner appears to be from around 2005.
    Drivers (for Win 7 64 bits) about 2007 v1.1.
HP Scanner 2400 (old) Not Scanning-7.jpg

Some support utilities for Win 8.1 64 bits.

Sadly few people think to find and post the driver download page, so I found it for you:
    https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers...scanner/297429

As the scanner is so old there is no guarantee of compatibility.

Have you tried uninstalling its drivers and reinstalling the one above in compatibility mode?

In this not great video it seems this guy got your scanner running under Win 10.

Use at your own risk- I have no idea if it works myself.

You say you have 2 different programs for scanning, but neither works.

Do you mean 3rd party programs?
In what way don't they work? Any error message? From what?

    Thanks both for responding

I have everything remote disabled on my system. If I recall correctly PS ISE is accessible from Task Manager. Checking the Services list it is NOT listed.
Found PowerShell ISE and invoked through Run. (Brought up an APP).
Put in your script as written, but nothing occurred. ?
    Invoked Powershell normally..
    Got output using your info.

Doesn't look like anything wrong to me.

    DalChina.
Prior to posting I checked HP website and the scanner was not listed and not supported. They recommend ScanVue (third party).
I use little third party software (may be forced to in this instance, hopefully not). Thanks for the links and will check them out.

    Regards

I finally got a PREVIEW scan, from Window Fax and Scan, but took about 5-10 minutes for the scanner to work even though its been online for several hours. Still waiting on actual scan. Here's a dump file if someone can troubleshoot. Forums won't let me upload DM?????

I used to have Vuescan and it worked great. It is free to try (you get a watermark). Price was 49.99 back then. if you buy it the watermark will disappear and it has pdf capabilities.

    Download VueScan 9.8.15

So far no sign you've tried to reinstall the driver or resolve anything you mentioned... just seems you're trying 'as is'.

I found the one reference to this scanner 'probably' working with Win 10- if you can find other examples, that suggests it's possible.

Otherwise, it's a matter of luck.

I have an old scanner that is not compatible. But I can use it via Windows XP (e.g.) as a virtual machine (VM) using VirtualBox (free).

As regards uploading files, permitted file types and sizes are stated in the relevant tutorial.
There are a couple of possible ways to do that- but I suggest no one's actually going to look at your dmp file

It's about 20 years old, and not very good optical resolution of 1200 dpi, so essentially only fit for recycling.

Any AIO printer will have a scanner in the lid with equal if not better performance and be compatible with Windows 10/11 and the Scan App, PDF functionality as well.

All scanners basically scan to a bitmap image file usually TIF, you can always import this to any Software then to a PDF if required, so Scan to PDF is a redundant function.

You can try VueScan if you wish, but the cost of that makes little sense.

I've haven't pursued this YET as I'm not sure if I even have a copy of the driver. This systems been basically upgraded since 1998, maybe even from Windows 3.1. While I have a hard copy of Windows 7 itself, Win-10 was done based on Microsoft's free upgrade.
I've located the INF file for the driver, and will dig through that file to see if I can find the name of the driver itself, but if the drivers itself is corrupt then ???. The HP site you were kind enough to provide a link to, is the same one I had previously visited and HP (unless I'm missing something) is saying the 2400 driver is not supported. Whether the old driver is still available is unknown on HP ,but looking through several of their web pages, the 2400 does not appear in their lists.

Going with a VM makes sense (never used one so will have to research. But if, the driver is corrupt, then even then ?? Now that I think of it, I still have HDD for every operating system, so I could extract the driver from Win-7, provided MS$, hasn't done something behind the scenes.

Considering the HP page I cited above:
    https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers...scanner/297429
    - is that the correct scanner?
    Click 'Try manually...'
Select Windows, Win 7 64 bit.
    Click Change
HP Scanner 2400 (old) Not Scanning-1.jpg

    Click Download =>
HP Scanner 2400 (old) Not Scanning-untitled.png

    - and you can see it was downloaded.

In cases where a driver is not readily available, try SDI (Snappy Driver Installer) - free. This is one program that seems comparatively reliable,

I don't know where your located but I'm in the US, Using your last posted link (thank you), the pages HP presents to me are different that what you are seeing. This is what I'm getting. First shows driver not available (I assumed HP determined I had Win-10).

HP Scanner 2400 (old) Not Scanning-hp2400_link.jpg

I selected driver manually. As list shows, the last driver available is for Win-8.

HP Scanner 2400 (old) Not Scanning-hp2400_manual.jpg

FWW: I'm running a 32 bit OS (CPU Intel 64 bit). Since this system was upgraded from Win-7, my guess is the driver is either Win-7 or Win-10 installed something else. However, am downloading the WIn-7 driver off HP site just in case it may be corrupt.
I wrote a quickie program to access the scanner using WIA. Getting the same problem as FAX and SCAN. Don't have time to go in depth on my quickie to see if I can solve (if solveable) the hangup, but will pursue in the next couple of days, time permitting.

Downloaded the driver and the Updates, as well as their HP doctor software. Hopefully can be run without install on my system.
I'd don't know if HP has changed, but both Adobe and HP use to put a lot of JUNK on ones system when you installed any of their software. PITA to get it off.

Will check out Snappy Driver Installer in the interim.

    =========================================
Just ran HP doctor and indicated problems but could not solve. My guess because they no longer support this scanner.
Tried to install the two updates. One said not needed, other not applicable.
Will have to table this, most likely until next weekend, hopefully before, but I'm going to run Win-7 and see if any issues.
At least tell me the scanner itself is still OK.
Have a friend with an EPSON stand alone scanner, like this, he says combined are JUNK as far as quality copying pictures (which I don't do). He had similar problems with Win-10 / Win-11 and finally found some software that will work with his.

Again thanks for all your efforts on my behalf.

    David
