Have you tried the demo version of VueScan to see if works any better?

No, I didn't. Thing is that the scanner software, in my opinion, is doing quite a good job and has sufficient features. I did check out alternatives (SilverFast and Vuescan), though briefly. I've read a review on these products and Epson scan and it is claimed that Epson does a decent job. DPReview's conclusion was : "VueScan is the best all-rounder, but Epson Scan does surprisingly well"

I don't scan films, but mostly documents.
Believe it has something to do with the communication with the scanner part of the printer and it is difficult to pinpoint the problem. as mentioned earlier, the 1st scan goes fine, the 2nd not (i.e. no scan), restart the scanner and things usually go right from there on.

So I let it rest for now.

Thanks to all for the contributions.

The Epson scanner software will have a TWAIN driver supplied by Epson, not WIA.

Then, why not try Network rather than USB connection, or vice versa.

Scanners use a temporary folder somewhere, in mine there is also a TWAIN.log file there, whether that is useful for errors I do not know.

    First What Scanner???

Anyway, Microsoft no longer ships TWAIN with Windows - TWAIN compatibility. I believe this started somewhere with Windows ME.

Scanner now support WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) - What is a WIA Scanner Driver? A guide to understanding scanner drivers.

Anyway, I have an Epson (XP-960) Multifunction printer with a scanner built in and it works just fine with the supplied Epson drivers. And no TWAIN drivers.

Sorry - I know this is an old thread - I forgot about it.

    I coincidentally found the 'solution'.

Whilst installing the Epson software, also software named "Epson Printer Connection Checker" is installed.
    Desktop icon, with target:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\EPSON Software\Epson Printer Connection Checker\EPPCCHKR.EXE" /DSI"

Never used it and (frankly) never cared to investigate what

Anway, when scanning 'hangs', i.e. scanner software started, but nothing is happening, then run this application.
I guess.. it resets the connection. The scanning instantly continues.
