Anyone know Surface troubleshooting? Need "cover" keyboard help.

My wife and I own two Surface Pro 4 with "cover" keyboards. One keyboard stopped communicating with its computer. When we swapped keyboards, the one that would not work on the problem machine worked properly on the second Surface.
That seems to point to the computer itself, but I'm having a hard time finding any help for this problem. Both computers are running recent versions of Windows 10.
Using an on-screen keyboard the Surface shows no failures in System or Device Manager entries.

Even if you have no solution, I would appreciate suggestions for specific locations where I can turn for troubleshooting. Nothing I have found in extensive online searching seems to deal with this problem. I have cleaned the #!%& out of the connection but that's about as far as it goes.

That is not how the Surface keyboards work, they use a magnetic connection that allows information from keypresses to be transferred between keyboard and surface when attached.

If you have swapped keyboards and they both work on different machines, it is possible they got swapped if they are the same color and no one would know the difference.
