    Can't install driver for Realtek RTL8188CU network adapter

    got a shiny new adapter dongle to connect to my 5GHz network. i was hoping the adapter dongle would be plug & play, but no such luck. so i've tried to install drivers from the cd that came with the adapter (per the instructions), a supposedly newer one from the manufacturer's website, and two others i found that seemed newer. none have made any difference - the dongle is recognized, but will not start, and the PC complains about the driver.

    checking the device properties gives me

    This device cannot start. (Code 10)
    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    ...and a status of "Driver error". no details, no other information. even the device troubleshooter can't find the problem. i have no idea what to do now. thanks for any help.
