Is it an official controller made by MS or is it a copy made by another company? It has been reported that such off brand controllers will no longer work in Windows 10.

Nice. Doesn't help me at all, but like I said it works for a lot of people. It also doesn't work for a lot of people.

I really think it has something to do with my Windows 10 install. Don't know why, it's just the only thing I can think of. In a week I should have the replacement PC, I'll install the Xbox 360 disk and then I'll plug it in, see what happens.

Yours is a Microsoft Product as some were not here i saw ? Microsoft Windows 8.1 always had the drivers and no need for disc and Windows 10 is same. Was not sure if mentioned by Dch48 if this is true about non-microsoft items, if so maybe the issue.
Does other USB devices work fine ? Considering thinking it was Windows install.

What I said is part of the new Windows 10 feature that is supposed to reject non genuine things, whether software or hardware. It has been reported before that the 3rd party controllers stopped working in Win 10 but that the real MS ones were okay. I have a MS wired USB Xbox 360 for Windows controller and it works fine. I didn't have to install any drivers either. It just looks like a standard Xbox controller with a dongle that adapts it to USB.

It only figures that the first things affected by the new "feature" would be their own products.

Is it a wireless controller with a detachable cord? If so, you might only have a charging cable and not a data cable.

When windows reports that device descriptor failed, it means that the GND and V+ lines are properly connected. The D+ and/or D- lines are either not connected or are connected to GND.

Did you ever find a solution to this? I just got a brand new xbox 360 controller, I know it works, I tried it out on an xbox before I purchased it. I have windows completely up to date, my windows shows it there, says its installed and working, but it wont do a damn thing,. I even installed that Xbox control app from the windows or google store or whatever it is, and that app wont even recognizance my controller is plugged in. It just shows a black screen, and says, insert a controller. HELP ME! I wanna play Witcher 3 and DIRT racing in a bad way! Im sick of AWSD and arrows. LOL
And my controller is the special edition Call of Duty MW3 silver and black, so im guessing its an official version.

Different cable? Don't know what you're talking about, my controller is brand new, it's not being recognized. End of story, and do a search, lots of others like me. I did the suggested fix, it failed. Spent 3 hours with XBox CSR day before yesterday, she tried everything. We installed the software again.

This computer I just got has some keyboard issues, they are sending me out another one. I've requested it had Microsoft 10 preinstalled, whether they do that or not I don't know.
