Processor nogo Win11 upgrade - Upgrade processor?

    Windows 10 Pro 21H1

I ran the MS Win11 hardware suitability tool. And my trusty, 3 year old Lenovo P50 failed--reason: processor.

    The machine's processor is: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz

Just curious... is it reasonable that a newer processor might be plug compatible with the motherboard and with Win11?

Below in this list I've prepared for the many many times this topic is going to arise there's a list of CPUs that are deemed compatible:

You could try this tool... it may tell you "why" you are failing... 3rd Party tool to check for Win 11 compatibility - GitHub | Windows 11 Forum

    Graphics:

Only machines after about 2015 can support Direct X 12 graphics. Try dxdiag.exe on yours e.g. from a Run box

    CPU:
You can check to see if your CPU is in this list: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...tel-processors

    TPM

Check whether you have TPM 2 and if it’s enabled: run
    tpm.msc
    from e.g. a run command.

The i7-6700HQ is listed as using an FCBGA1440 socket. (That's a flip chip ball grid array.) I believe that means it's soldered to the motherboard.

Even if it was socketed, I doubt that any 8th generation or newer CPU would be compatible with the motherboard/chipset.

You may have TPM 2.0 available as a BIOS option. (My cheap Ideapad 110-15isk, I3-6100U CPU, has it. Intel calls it PTT, platform trust technology.)

The Windows 11 hardware support issue seems a bit clouded at the moment. Will your PC run Windows 11? Even Microsoft can't say for sure | ZDNet

I wouldn't buy a new CPU until Windows 11 is released and we see the final requirements. There may also be a work around for 'unsupported CPUs".

    Well, this is a first...

I received 3 replies to my question. All 3 provided significant insight to the point my question is no longer and I've got a plan going forward. That's why my thank you comment was identical for all 3.

Given the CPU list I gave you, you can find out what you can put in your MOBO that is in that list.

    Do you understand?

    Good luck.

    Fairly tough language.

You suggest replacing a surface mounted CPU? With one that's at least 8th generation?

    Unlikely.

Re understand replacing per list - Yes

Will I do - Doubtful. Given all newly learned moving parts, the risk/reward (for me) likely not +

Would I spend lots of time/$ simply for a Win version - Nope... if, as mentioned, the machine's not compatible once the version is released, (then) I'll likely wait my usual 5 years for machine replace.
