How to repair a damaged partition on a data drive?

My main desktop (running Windows 10 version 2004 19041.685) computer has a StarTech hotswap trayless rack that I've used for years:

I have a number of bare hard drives that I use to backup and to store offline data; I put one of my offline data drives in which I'd used a month or so ago and something appears to be wrong and the partition must be damaged in some way because Windows says it's "5588.90 GB RAW Healthy (Basic Data Partition)":

I've tested the drive using the Western Digital Diagnostics and it passes both the SMART and short DST tests and the drive does not appear to have any problems but there's no partition data. Is there any way to repair or recover the damaged partition and files? I've googled but almost all results are about a "Recovery Partition".

    Hi @NormAtHome,

It is not a partition lost. How many partitions did you have?

As far as I see, a partition exists and it has a drive letter G: ( Only when a volume is created one can assign a drive letter. When you create a volume, a partition table is wriiten in either Sector 0 ( MBR Disk) or sector 2 ( GPT Disk)

If you have MiniTool Partition Wizard free installed, just examine the disk with it. It may show a partition G: and as "unformatted"

This is due to file System corruption. ( Volume/Partition Boot sector corrupted or MFT corrupted. We may have to decide which one)

Without further ado, please read my post here

Harddisk is RAW and post screenshot 5 and 6 of TestDisk. ( Note: Select your faulty 6GB disk in screen 2 and in screen 3, Select [EFI GPT] and not [Intel] and press Enter to go to the 4th Screen)

    Screen 1: [No Log] Enter.
Screen 2: In your case you will select 6GB faulty drive. [Proceed] Enter
    Screen 3: [EFI GPT] Enter
Screen 4: [Advanced] - Filesystem utils - Enter. ( ya, we are much advanced
    )
Screen 5: Does it show your partition? Is [Boot] highlighted? Take a screenshot and then press Enter
Screen 6: Shows the status of the Volume/Partition Boot Sector and its backup. Take a screenshot

    Quit TestDisk.

Post screen 5 and screen 6

We can proceed further only after examining the screenshots.

You will only be going upto Screen 6, post screen 5 and screen 6 and then quit TestDisk. Do not overshoot]

Windows disk manager doesn't show all partitions. As mentioned, use MiniTool Partition Wizard free.

    Hi @NormAtHome,

Just now I got up for my day and your sleep time is fast approching. May be you may have to keep awake for some more time.

hmmm... I overlooked the fact that your 6TB disk is a GPT disk. That is why you are seeing two partitions. The first one is the 128 MB MSR ( Microsoft System Reserved partition ) . The second one is your data partition.

Run TestDisk again, and when you reach the fifth screen showing the two partitions, select/highlight the second Data partition . In the Command line at the bottom if [Boot] is not highlighted , highlight [Boot] and press Enter

How to repair a damaged partition on a data drive?-16-01-2021-16-13-31.jpg

That will take you to the sixth screen showing the status of the Volume/Partition boot records. Post the screenshot.

Note: The Command line at the bottom can be different depending upon the status of the boot sectors in your case. So post the screenshot of the full TestDisk Window as shown above including the bottom command line.. No partial or truncated screenshot.

Further instructions after you post the requested screenshot.

    my 2 cents...

partition recovery software recovers partition but makes files corrupt from raw drives. reclaime pro is best option for file recovery... if it continues to count errors after errors, you have a bad drive. drive controller?? check event viewer. seagate seatools (boot usb i think. unsure if capable of raw support) can help.

it changed to raw, it will do it again. the drive is bad. recover your files with reclaime pro, then screw around testing it later.

Hi mrpink, Welcome to Ten Forums.

Please Keep your 2 cents with you .
    1. Here we are not attempting Partition Recovery.
    2. Also your statement that "partition recovery software recovers partition but makes files corrupt from raw drives" is not true.
    3. Your stätement "it changed to raw, it will do it again" is also not true.

I have to repudiate these statements lest other people get misled.

do you know what my 2 cents means? it means my opinion is only worth 2 cents... please keep your smiley with you.
    1. your post didn't appear to be relevant to ops problem.
    2. DIRECTLY from experience. after using partition recovery on a raw drive, my files became corrupt.
    3. absolutely happened to me again. same drive. bad controller.

i hope op doesn't lose his data and his drive. thats the goal. good luck to op.
