I bought an old Advent 5711 laptop. And this DVD drive won't detect any disc whatsoever. But the drive itself is detected? Any suggestions? No driver is found anywhere online.

    Thanks.

It doesn't detect under BIOS, during boot or under Windows. On another post you said that the laptop wast working. Now it is?

Maybe you posted this after? Advent 5711 Laptop

If the drive is detected but it won't read a disk, and it's not showing any error messages (How to Delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters Values), the drive could be defective.

I haven't seen an optical drive that required drivers other than the standard Windows ones since the days of Windows 95.

As bobkn says, probably a bad optical drive.
The drive can work (run-spin) and be detected in BIOS and OS, but it is usually the laser that goes bad or out of alignment (or dirty!) that causes then to not read disks.
Optical drives are so cheap it hardly makes sense to spend a lot of time trying to repair them.
