    Is this disk Kaput?

I decided to update my spare Windows 10 laptop but found that whenever it starts/restarts it always come up with the message:

    Failure ID: OLJ02-791A7K-MFGH7F-60F503

    and refer to hp.com/go/techcenter/PCDiags.

Now, I'm asked to do a disk test at the fault screen and it makes no difference whether I do a short test or long test but it fails instantly.

But if I do an enter at the fault screen it goes sailing happily into Windows. Every time.

I ve been able to update this system from a much earlier one and it is now at 1909 - 18363.1016

I'm assuming therefore that the disk controller is faulty but is there any way to repair it or does it mean a new disk is required. And also a lot of work to get the system transferred onto a new disk?

    Thanks

Hi, as you can boot into Windows, I suggest you download and install Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) - incl. SSDs - and see what that says about your disk(s).

That is a really good program and gives the best instant comment I know of right on its GUI.

Have you been using disk imaging regularly and routinely as is oh, so often avised here? If so, your last question is easy to answer. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free-paid) + large enough external disk for image files.

Noted you've upgraded to 1909, which suggests you've been able to make big changes without problems, which could be a good sign.

Have you taken the advice offered and run HP diagnostics?

I presume it is suggesting you run hp diagnostics
Or you could any of the other disk check tools. WD and Seagate have them for free download.

The only way to know if its faulty is to download the disk makers test software from their site and test

if after running the other diagnostic tools also report errors, then it's time for a drive replacement

I'm inclined to agree erpster4. Having run several disk test programs and they all say the same thing.

I should say that I only use this spare laptop for research or as a test bed. There is no data of any worth on it. So is it feasible to continue using it like this, where the bootup fails but it works just fine otherwise?

So unless there are no rays of hope being offered then I will thank who responded.

    I will wait and see.

Clear case for replacement- you can see how HDSentinel gives a very helpful view.

You can clean install Win 10 on a new disk in your laptop, and activation should be automatic. Easiest if linked to your MS live id. See tutorials on activation for more.

This could be an opportunity to upgrade to a SSD.

    Hello @bertie11,

Just as a check, you could run what I posted here => How To Check Hard Disk Health In Windows

    I hope this helps!

With that result and the results in post #6, I would have to say YES unfortunately!
