Need Advice on Keyboard Problem

Was given a laptop to fix. It's an HP Notebook running Home 1903, build 18362.900 with 8GB of RAM. She cannot log in to Windows. It always tells her that the password is incorrect. When I connected a USB keyboard I successfully booted into Windows. Typing her password into Word Pad showed that every time she types in the first letter of her password, a 'j', what is actually entered is 'jm'. Everything else types okay until the last 4 characters, all numbers, one of which is a 5. The 5 doesn't display.

She swears that no one has ever spilled anything on the keyboard and that 'something else' is causing the problem. Is the best method here to open up the laptop, disconnect the keyboard and attempt to clean it? Or should I just go online and order her a new keyboard?

Hi if it was me I would just get a new keyboard. But have you tried just blowing air under the keys to maybe get anything that might be underneath out.

This laptop is an HP Pavilion 15ay068nr and from the looks of it and everything I've read it would take hours of work to take this sucker apart, pop in a new keyboard and then put it back together. You see, the inconsiderate SOBs who designed this laptop didn't design a separate keyboard that just fits into a space in the bottom of the chassis - the individual keys seem to come up through holes in that chassis and I'm not sure replacing the keyboard is even doable. I could always take a picture of it and upload it if anybody's interested.

Nothing was spilled on it. The keyboard went bad, and I don't think it can be replaced.

In the service manual, the keyboard is listed as being integral with the top cover and looks like you have to remove everything from the top cover. Silver is 856026-001 part number. I would say your best bet might be isopropyl alcohol in a syringe to try to get it under the affected keys followed by blowing with air.
