    New BD-RE drive not working

I purchased a new blu-ray read/write drive Pioneer BDR-UD03 from China. It installed properly and Device Manager says that it's working okay. It shows up as Drive D:\ but doesn't read any disks so doesn't show in Explorer with any disk inserted. When a disk is inserted the LED blinks slowly but never the faster blink that normally indicates reading a disk. Nero identifies the drive but says "drive not ready" when a disk is inserted.

The drive came without a region so I changed to Region 1. Still no joy. Windows says that the best driver is already installed. I haven't uninstalled/reinstalled the drive for fear of getting farther away from a solution rather than closer.

How can I tell if the drive is bad or if there are some settings that need changing?

Question: Do you both cables connected and firmly seated in the ports on the device itself and on the mobo? If so, try using a different port on the mobo.

Yes. I checked cables before posting here and now have rechecked. Also based on your advice I plugged to a different port on the MOBO. Still no joy.

Have I provided enough information to determine whether the BD-RW is good or bad?

At boot-up have you entered the BIOS settings and see if the drive is identified there? Windows takes hardware/resource data from the BIOS during startup so it properly knows what it has to work with.

I hope that I'm not wasting your time, but what disks have you tried?

I would try a CD, a DVD, and a BluRay disk. They may each have their own laser (780 nm, 670 nm, 405nm).

At a guess, it's RMA time. I hope that's possible.

Bobkn - yes, I've tried several disks.

On the BIOS question - I can't get to BIOS settings. I have another thread addressing this issue.

I have eliminated the cabling issue by hooking into a different BD-RW and the spare works fine. The new BD-RW is now outside the case where I can be sure that cabling is secure and still it doesn't read disks. So I think that I'm keying in on the drive. But I'm not sure that it's a bad drive. Are there some tests that can isolate the problem to hardware or software/firmware related?

I ordered a different (Panasonic) drive from Amazon. Supplier was FLStore in China. The drive failed within the warranty period so I returned it. See screenshot of Amazon return notification. Seller said drive was no longer in stock so offered a new upgrade (Pioneer) so I accepted. New drive arrived yesterday and I can't get it to work. After some checking I saw that the region was not set so I chose Region 1 (USA). The screenshots at the beginning of this thread show other properties.New BD-RW drive not working-dvd-drive-back.jpgNew BD-RW drive not working-dvd-drive-front.jpgNew BD-RW drive not working-dvd-drive-top.jpgNew BD-RW drive not working-2019-11-17-2-.png

Another vote for a Faulty drive. I am at the point that I no longer use my external BD-RW. It just sits in a cabinet.
