Stop Windows 10 from overwriting drivers.

Hello friends, I have a small problem. I have a Hp 250 g4 with windows 10 1809 and everything works flawlessly excepting the audio driver. The driver that windows ships works great and the sound coming from the laptop is decent on the speakers and good on the audio jack. The problem is that windows is overwriting the driver with a newer one which makes everything sound like a tin can (no bass, no voice, high treble) and no matter what I do I cant seem to stop it. I tried disabling the automatic search for drivers which doesnt work, either via group policy or regedit or through the menu option but windows ignores me and soon after reverting to the stock driver i can see the „driver installation module” working its way and pushing the new driver. Is there any other way of stopping windows from overwriting the driver. Thank you.
    PS.Windows 10 1809 PRO.

or for no driver updates try
Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10 | Tutorials

You might also like to try Windows update minitool (free) - easy to find- which can help.

In the end the only fix was disabling windows update completely.

Actually you just have to disable Windows from updating the drivers in https://www.howtogeek.com/302595/how...dware-drivers/

    Hi,

If you revert to the stock driver by uninstalling downloaded Realtek one, you're going to have this issue for all your (1809) life...

    Perhaps this could help.

The downloaded realtek driver is not generic (tried that, doesnt work), it installs a special version designed for hp systems which enables dolby but regardless of that the 1809 built in driver is the only one that produces a decent sound. @bro, trieed that, Windows doesnt care.

Just wondering- are you certain the driver IS delivered via Windows update, and that it's not the driver updating itself?

If it was delivered by Windows update, you should see a record of that in Update History.

But noted you do also say that killing Windows update stopped its replacement.

My Realtek version is 6.0.1.7629 on this PC - not updated, note, but on my just delivered clean installed Thinkpad t440s, it's 6.0.1.8224.

Whilst using the built-in speakers on the Thinkpad voice is ok, but music sounds pretty poor (speaker quality), via headphones it's fine.

Thinkpad is up to date, this PC is still to get January's update. Both 1809.

See if you can change permissions to the Realtek folder:

@dalchina, the speakers were „fine” , in the sense that audio quality is crappy because thats what the speakers are. The problem was on the 3.5 mm jack, with the stock driver everything went fine with headphones and a 2.1 system, with the updated driver, it cuts off any bass (the sub stops working, and the headphones sound empty). It have tried checking and unchecking full range speakers, enabling and disabling enhancements, adjusting the realtek equalizer, it was simply not working. As a side note it seems that once downloaded windows will reinstall the driver regardless of the settings you make except group policity which knocks the device down altogether (it states that the device cannot start due to admin bla bla).
