Widen notification bar day and date area to fit single line

On my laptop I'd like to widen the day and date area so that the day and date fit on one line. For instance, for today, I'd like it to display "Thursday/09/15/2016." I have made this change in settings, and when I hover the mouse over that area, the display is correct. But because the display area is too small, it otherwise shows only the time. This works fine on my desktop PC--plenty of room there (see illustrations for comparison). So how do I widen the day and date area on my laptop? Or would shrinking the font size there let them fit, and how do I do that? Thanks.

This might be a partial solution to your issue. If you right click a blank area of the taskbar you should get a pop-up menu. Click on Properties. A dialog box should open with a check box that allows you to use small taskbar buttons. If I uncheck that box my taskbar gets wider to accommodate the larger buttons and correspondingly the clock will also show the date. Unfortunately, it doesn't show the day. Perhaps someone smarter than me will have a better answer.

Thanks, marsmimar. That made no difference on my laptop--after the taskbar icons shrunk, only the time appeared. I can see that on my laptop there's a barely discernable division separating the space for the date and time from the rest of the notification area. I don't see that on my desktop PC. In any case, maybe someone has a solution. Thanks for trying.
