Ok, that's all going well, but a couple of pgms are being stubborn. I have the png and xml files for Firefox and Photoshop in the right places but there is something different about their names. Firefox is firefox.exe (i.e. lower case f) and Photoshop is Photoshp (i.e. with no 3rd o). I made sure that the png and xml have the same spelling as firefox and Photoshp but they don't work.

Even though they are currently pinned to Start they do not show up in the
    C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder.

I wonder if I should just send a shortcut for them to the desktop and then cut and paste into \\\\\Start Menu\Programs folder (as I did with the files)? Just a little hesitant to try that with an exe file before asking in case it's begging for trouble.

Ok, thought I'd try it with something less critical like Photoshop annd yes, it works by creating a shortcut on the desktop and cut & paste into Start Menu/Programs (i.e. same technique as for pinning files). So right click on firefox.exe and Photoshp.exe to create the shortcuts.

Well there seems to be just one last hurdle to jump - but it may be a little high.

I am not allowed to save anything into "This PC" as I expected, so does that mean that I have to put up with miserable little ¼" icons for the various drives?

I don't quite get you there, could you post a screenshot please?

The icons on the top right are for the three external drives Samsung (D), LG BD RW (E), Sandisk (F). If I copy the xml & png files for them and try to cntl V into "This PC" absolutely nothing happens - not even a warning to nick off, and if I try to drag them there I get a little no entry icon following the cursor (and this was pretty much expected).

So I got those miserable little icons there by sending shortcuts for the drives to the desktop, renaming and just changing the normal icon to the ones I made.

As near as I can tell I can only get larger icons in the start menu by copying the xml &png, so if I can't paste them there then perhaps I'm stuck with the tiny ones?

Gimme a bit, I might have an idea, probably won't work, but worth a try.

BTW, there were a number of very amusing icons available for Godmode, but I ended up going with:

I tried several ways and nothing worked.
    Maybe @Hopachi knows a way.
Need to wait until he shows up again.
The problem is these are drive and not programs, files, or folder, where you can put the XML and PNG next to them. I tried creating a shortcut(was able to customize the shortcut icon) and placing the shortcut icon in a folder with the tile pack, but whenever pind to start, it just used the icon and not the tile pack.

I even tried placing the folder containing shortcut, XML, and PNG directly in:

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
    and
    C:\Users\Cliff S\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

    But neither worked.

Yes, I wasn't hopeful, but thanks very much for having a go Cliff.

There is one thing that will work well though:

Pin your drives to Quick Access in File Explorer, then make sure you have File Explorer showing on the left column in Start Menu, if it isn't go to Settings\Personalization\Start\Choose which folders appear on Start, and turn on File Explorer.
    Start panel icon size-image-004.png

    Then you'll have them here:
    Start panel icon size-image-003.png
A bit less cluttered I find.
