I once had one of those cheap headsets too. I threw it away. It was really no good. A reasonable one would go for around $40.

I'm just getting a mic for now. I really don't need a headset.

Would be nice if you reported back once you have it. I am wondering whether that will work. You can test it with the sound recorder which is in all systems.

Mic checks out ok - it isn't that she doesn't understand me, she isn't listening

I'm not sure, I poked around settings and thought I had everything up and running. As I mentioned, this is low priority - I've played with voice commands many times over the years and it is a neat trick, just not something I'd really use to operate a machine. Cortana is just the newest iteration.

I recall a msg in Cortana that said my mic was not on ... but I could see the volume meter work when I spoke and could record in sound recorder.

Thanks for the suggestion Badrobot- I might try to find that setting in a few weeks.
