You can put the backup image on an external HDD. You also need to create a rescue disk to boot from. That can be CD/DVD or USB. I don't know whether you could put the rescue environment on the HDD and boot from that. You can also create a rescue entry in the windows boot menu which is very convenient but no good if the disk is borked.

If you do, it will erase everything else on the drive.

You would be better off using Macrium (Free Edition) it's much better. We have a tutorial for that too. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/6...re.html?filter[1]=Backup%20Restore

You can format a USB as NTFS. You can also create a small partition on a non OS internal hard drive and put the rescue environment on that. It works exactly the same, just much faster. Just use the one time boot menu and choose that drive to boot from.

I agree with others here about Macrium. I use restore points as well and they have helped me in many cases. But, I also do regular images with Macrium. Kind of like, I use both a belt and suspenders.

Restore points are not a backup but they can be useful.

Bingo on that! I even have Kyhi's Rescue on an unlettered partition (2GB) and just pick it from the BIOS boot options. (F12)
