I know the difference between your and you're, but my fingers don't seem to. Two or three words I type often wrong, words like "your" and I stop at you. I will write "the" and end up with th e. Thank goodness for spell check. LOL

One thing I'd love to know is how I would go about "correcting" without offending someone who absolutely doesn't know the difference between
you and you're
chairs and chair's
its and it's
And the list goes on and on . . .
Wynona there is no way you can correct an adult without hurting their feelings and making them feel inferior. I would not do it if I were you. It should not be that important to you. Correcting a child would be okay.
@Wynona, they would have to visit this thread, looking for the information. I think, in very few other cases, (although there are some), would it be possible to correct someone without irritating them or making them feel upset or belittled. Unfortunately, someone whose posts are consistently filled with improperly-spelled words and bad grammar, well, it gives a negative light to their posts. Of course, it's usually not their fault, but that of their teachers, who should be drawn and quartered for it!
I partly agree with you.... it does reflect badly on their views and opinions, in my eyes. If they are an adult English speaker, then yes it is their fault.
I consider it, lack of respect to the reader if the writer can't be bothered to make an effort.
Should I mention it, when I see it ? Difficult question, I don't know when it happened, but I have become someone who considers communication important.
It will have a lot to do with how I view the world, I'm sure.
I agree with most of what you say, Simrick, except for their teachers. I grew up in a house full of brothers who took pride in not applying themselves in school.
Also, my school teacher friend will retire from teaching at the end of this year, mostly because a number of her students think they should get a passing grade for showing up to class, but not doing the work. They think it's the teacher's job to give them a passing grade but not their job to earn a passing grade.
