People often ask why out (UK) plugs are much bigger. That is because most of our appliances need a separate fuse. Probably not so critical now in more modern housing with proper trip systems but a lot of housing stock still uses fuse wire and many a life had been saved as the appliance fuse fused first. I have no doubt our plugs are much safer.

In the U.S. we have outlets called GFCIs (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) or AFCIs (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters) (Which are a pain). By code in many areas a GFCI is required in the kitchen area or bathroom or outside. They also make GFCI or AFCI breakers at the breaker box/service entrance. But it's far better to have them as an outlet. Otherwise you're having to go to the breaker box/panel all the time to reset it.

Yes, that is where the UK got driving on the left from. All about the sword, but like the Magna Carta, it's old school... LOL!

But there's no way in hell you could get people to drive on another side of the road after years worth of establishment. What works, works. Besides, when the technology matures, self-driving cars will null and void a lot, and I mean a lot of the traditional driving nomenclature of things...

Ah, looks like the UK does have 'em. Arc-fault circuit interrupter - Wikipedia

I don't think so. Last time I was in UK (1996-2001) they were still using the Imperial units.

Yes, but you increase the risk of a child putting his/her tiny finger in and getting a shock. European Schuko plugs are much narrower and the simpler (similar to Italian without the central ground) even narrower and safer. In Greece we have both but newer homes prefer Schuko.
Which I did as a toddler. I was standing on a kitchen drawer with a RCMP on his horse and a knitting needle. Which went through the house and into the wall socket. Result. One toddler sitting by a perimeter fence, after opening the kitchen door without using the handle. Lucky I wasn't standing on the floor. Had a nice ride in an ambulance and now, 73 years later, still have the scars on my right hand.

Britain officially adopted the Metric System in 1965.
