    Wrapping up

    Axe0,

    How was your weekend?

My response was to the fact that I searched Win for "Hotfix," instead of updates. "Hotfix" is not a search term to be found inside my computer.

Hiring techs: There were a few other techs I interviewed before selecting the person I did. I only asked the questions necessary for my immediate issues and the fault lies with me not being knowledgeable to ask better questions. At any rate, when I sent him an email to let him know my issues with Iobit - especially Driver Booster and ASC, he got defensive. I told him that dumps aren't arbitrary opinions, which is what he seemed to imply. Am I wrong?

What's new is that the tech from Firefox told me to change the Flash addon to "Ask to Activate." I said something to him that I hadn't mentioned to the MS techs, which was that my webcam would flicker just before crashing. Before I changed Flash, I completely uninstalled Iobit and its attendant programs. It took a very long time to wipe everything - which surprised me. (I need a program that thinks for me, as I had to look up too many paths.) So, over the weekend, I spent a couple of hours each day opening emails that had - prior to Friday - resulted in multiple crashes a day. So far, it has been extremely quiet and uneventful. It's hard to believe that my blue screens seem to be gone, finally.

I haven't yet tried to install the failed update. That may be a problem. Did you check out the Cumulative Update I referenced? I imagine I should try to install it, especially before the June CU gets installed on my computer.

    I have questions for you:

Is more than one interpretation possible?
Why did Microsoft take to long to tell me nothing?
Their response after my sending eight or so separate reports between PowerShell, MEMORY, and minidumps was surprisingly (to me) non-descriptive and too long in coming.

"The dumps clearly show that Firefox is corrupting memory in a way that makes Windows unstable, so Windows is blue-screening itself to prevent ongoing corruption. The fault itself is somewhere in Firefox, and we don't have the possibility of debugging that."

What else (not BSOD related) would the reports tell me? Can I see them?
I have other issues and if I could fix them, it would be excellent.

Have you a debugged report to send me?

It's awesome! The only thing is that it's hard to say if both solutions were the reason or just one.
    I welcome your input.
    Thank you for your help.

Please don't blame yourself, it is not your fault but the fault from the tech who is not knowledgeable.

Could you bring me in contact with this tech? I'd like to talk to him.

You're not wrong, the dump is generated from the memory that holds data that is loaded from the system at the time of the crash, a dump can only tell facts :)

Did you check out the Cumulative Update I referenced?
The cumulative update is re-released every month holding new patches for critical vulnerabilities and improvements, it'll only grow bigger everytime. You install it once and the next month only the new stuff is downloaded and installed.
This update holds almost all monthly security updates and improvements so it is recommended that you try to install it a.s.a.p. again

Is more than one interpretation possible?
I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to, but in many cases there is.

Why did Microsoft take to long to tell me nothing?
You know as much as I do, I guess they're just very busy with all the millions of customers they try to help everyday. That would be the only reason I can think of why Microsoft can take a long time to answer something.

The files can tell a lot of things, but the value of them depends on what you're looking for :)
As things are changing I would ask that you upload a new zip if you would like to know what other things can be told from the files.

    Can I see them?
Everyone who wants can see them, in some cases you have to know how to read it though.

I have other issues and if I could fix them, it would be excellent.
    What issues exactly?

    I don't. Thank you.

Could you bring me in contact with this tech? I'd like to talk to him.
Unless you want a personal introduction, he is on Thumbtack, thumbtack.com. His name is Anthony from Computer Rescue & Tutoring. You may do anything that you like, but he still owes me the time to determine why my computer no longer communicates with my HP printer. (It started on Win7 -- I attributed it monthly updates, carried over to Win 10.) How would you like me to approach this? I find it hard to talk to somebody with such a defensive posture - it's exhausting. Let me know.

You're not wrong, the dump is generated from the memory that holds data that is loaded from the system at the time of the crash, a dump can only tell facts :)
Facts - we like facts. That's what I thought. He didn't dispute me on his reply, but instead taught me about OEM compatibility. (I told you that I would ask him, even though I clarified that you meant support, not compatibility - Pedant.)

I will. Still haven't gotten to it today.

I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to, but in many cases there is.
I was wondering why he - John at MS - didn't say anything about removing the programs you suggested that I immediately uninstall. To that point, are other interpretations from reading my dumps and zips (plural) conceivable? You, dear Axe0, had a solution, while he had none. Can you relate to what I said about the flicker and Flash?

You know as much as I do, I guess they're just very busy with all the millions of customers they try to help everyday. That would be the only reason I can think of why Microsoft can take a long time to answer something.
Not quite. It was just the KB3156421 group.

    Where does this come from?
The quote is from John Wink, Senior Program Manager Lead at Microsoft. He ran the forum. Stephanie took over the first weekend, as John went out of town. I think there were three techs, but I don't know the qualifications of Stephanie or the other man. Between 5/17 (?) and 6/3, if all he - or anybody - had to do was debug one .dmp file, why did I run so many tests over nearly three weeks? See the forum:
    KB3156387 (TH1) and KB3156421 (TH2) May Cumulative Updates - Any feedback?kb3156421-th2-may-cumulative-updates-any-feedback?forum=win10itprogeneral

The files can tell a lot of things, but the value of them depends on what you're looking for :)

I look forward to that! Thank you.

Everyone who wants can see them, in some cases you have to know how to read it though.
I know and I do not know how to read it - but ----Some intuition and logic might offer the location/culprit. That might be half the battle. Then Anthony can take over when I can't complete it.

What was the kernel security error?

    What issues exactly?
    Exactly -
    1. Since original upgrade, I have an Access Denied message on Notepad, which opens to desktop.

    2. What's wrong with Permissions? Permissions might be what's making it impossible for my computer to talk to my printer using desktop app (HP Solution Center). I can't instruct printer to print this or that document.

I don't know what is wrong. I get repeated errors (you don't have permission). I am owner, user, admin, installer, etc. I know how to change permissions to - for instance - copy the dump files to desktop to compress and upload to OneDrive, but why did I have to change permissions on every single document that I transferred? Changing the folder didn't work. I think I also changed the C drive. At this point, I probably did TOO much.
I find Microsoft instructions impossible to follow. To me, it's not in a language that I understand and never can be. It's backwards.

    3. I have Windows 7 Backup and Restore errors since 10 upgrade.
"Windows cannot enable/disable the automatic backup job because Element not found (0x80070490)."
First error says cannot enable, second message says it cannot disable. Error # is the same on both. Program performs the backups (and makes images), but never without errors.

    4. After I crashed last week, I lost Windows Defender. I installed BitDefender, but why did that happen? The WUshowhide program released the hidden update ( (KB3156421), so it might have happened in the rollback after BSOD. Why did the Hide/Unhide troubleshooter relinquish the hidden update?
The entire saga is on the MS Forum page - especially if I'm forgetting sequence. I had about 40 crashes.

    5. What Event Viewer errors can I fix/eliminate - especially repeated service (and other) errors during BSODs?

    6. With the Win10 interface, when boxes open on computer - particularly Backup & Restore - the bottom of the box (where you click, "next") is hidden by the taskbar and sometimes I have a problem opening or closing the program. Can this be tweaked? Can this MS installing my updates be changed so that I CAN install and shutdown at the end of the day, when I"m ready? This is Home version.

    7. How do I modify index so that search excluded Recycle Bin/can I permanently change Control Panel to small icons?
In spite of finding instructions, I couldn't match it to what I viewed or follow them.

Being that I went to Win 10 unexpectedly, and I've now had a few months to become familiar, you can see that some things are cosmetic. Anthony and I didn't finish what we started - but I intend to. And to preempt your possible question, yes, it's counterproductive to spend $ on somebody who actually breaks your computer. I still hope that he can fix printer and rid me of the duplicate files from a mistake that was carried into my upgrade. That's tedious clean up - where "pay the guy" is advantageous.

    This is most, I think.
I am happy to answer any questions.
Do you want me to post new zip here?
    Thank you for offering, Axe0.

Just to note, I may have not answered all questions but I have as many as I could. For some questions I would like to see the result of System File Checker, see the end of this post for how to perform a system check and uploading the log of it.

Do you want me to post new zip here?
Yes please, in this way I can see new events and give a new analysis :)

How would you like me to approach this?
I suggest that you write down what you want and what that guy would do for you, try to do research about what you want and see what the results are compared to what the tech would do. This will help you to approach the tech in a better way, because you know better what you are talking about :)

Facts - we like facts. That's what I thought. He didn't dispute me on his reply, but instead taught me about OEM compatibility. (I told you that I would ask him, even though I clarified that you meant support, not compatibility - Pedant.)
OEM compatibility isn't really something I would call very interesting, but that is my opinion.

I was wondering why he - John at MS - didn't say anything about removing the programs you suggested that I immediately uninstall. To that point, are other interpretations from reading my dumps and zips (plural) conceivable?
Yes, if one doesn't know how to properly read dumps and other files that are asked for.
There can be a few reasons why someone doesn't suggest to remove such programs, like that they don't ask for such data as they do not think it is necessary.
    But coming back to
"The dumps clearly show that Firefox is corrupting memory in a way that makes Windows unstable, so Windows is blue-screening itself to prevent ongoing corruption. The fault itself is somewhere in Firefox, and we don't have the possibility of debugging that."
Either I'm not properly reading the dumps or am missing something or he is just very wrong, I have only once seen Firefox as a cause because of extensions/plugins being very improper coded from other developers but not from Firefox directly.

I know and I do not know how to read it - but ----Some intuition and logic might offer the location/culprit. That might be half the battle. Then Anthony can take over when I can't complete it.
Not a problem, you can learn it yourself in a matter of time if you want it. Asking others for help is a good way to extend yourself so you learn things from a different view :)

What was the kernel security error?
In simple words, a change has corrupted data that could allow malicious things to happen.

Could you please make a screenshot of your UAC setting and check following tutorial
Account Type - Change in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

What Event Viewer errors can I fix/eliminate - especially repeated service (and other) errors during BSODs?
Most of these errors occur when an unexpected shutdown has occured, these can be ignored.

can I permanently change Control Panel to small icons?
That should easily be possible, though it can happen that some user settings are changed to default when running programs for 'cleaning' the system.

    Diagnostics Test

     System File Check

    Please try following:
    • Open an admin command prompt
    • Copy/paste "sfc/scannow" (without quotes) and press enter
    • When it finished reboot your system
    • Open again an admin command prompt
    • Enter sfc/scannow again

If sfc/scannow says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" after the second SFC, please upload the cbs.log file located at %systemroot%\Logs\CBS\, if the file is too large try a 3rd party uploader like dropbox, onedrive, google drive, mediafire etc.
System File Check(SFC a.k.a. Windows Resource Protection) needs to have your system rebooted in order for sfc to try to fix the problems that it finds.
Make a photo of SFC and post it.

Please read about Flash - that was the only other change that I made. It's key to this (or it isn't).
I will - tonight or tomorrow. Thank you.
Yes please, in this way I can see new events and give a new analysis :)
See attached. I mistakenly hit unsubscribe from this post. Does posting again subscribe me, or do I have to tweak another setting?

This will help you to approach the tech in a better way, because you know better what you are talking about :) I actually did that. I knew what steps had to be taken next, but it was bigger than I am. I wanted a pro. Anthony didn't suggest that I was wrong or that my input wasn't vital. He said he'd have to fix the broken stuff before figuring out why printer wasn't working. He also told me he was sure I would LOVE the new programs or I could delete them.

OEM compatibility isn't really something I would call very interesting, but that is my opinion.
That's why I called him pedantic.

Interesting. Not in the beginning, but I used the dm-log to upload dumps towards the end. They had a massive amount of data at the forum. The quote from John (Microsoft) is verbatim. If you want to read it in context, please visit the forum. That link leads to our exact conversations - I'm "Noah".

Not a problem, you can learn it yourself in a matter of time if you want it. Asking others for help is a good way to extend yourself so you learn things from a different view :)
Thank you for the invite. I don't want to overstep your willingness to help. This exercise (asking for help) makes my questions stronger and more logical.

In simple words, a change has corrupted data that could allow malicious things to happen.
John said something about corruption - but you cite a different source. He dropped the ball by not being able to pinpoint further, which you did easily. At this point, all I can say is that my crashes stopped. (Did Flash play a role? Don't know.)

Could you please make a screenshot of your UAC setting and check following tutorial

Yes. Tomorrow or later. Gotta vote.

I've read the page largely, I cannot believe that they did not do anything with those IObit programs and that they did not ask certain questions but instead ignored many more relevant things than what they were up to.
I tried to create an account, but it seems someone has taken my username...

I'll post a new reply when I'm home to answer your questions :)

The problem is that they did nothing with the IObit stuff you mentioned, IObit stuff is known for breaking the system and leave it unbootable. It is the same for most other similar programs which is why it is strongly recommended to stay away from those kind of programs. Reverting back with a restore point or another backup is 1 of the only solutions, the other is a complete format of the installation and start all over again if a backup or restore point does not work.

    An important error to note.

Yes - my points exactly. Thank you for reading it. Other than your stress on Driver Booster, what category of programs do you mean - in general - for me to avoid? Until Anthony suggested the whole kit, I never used programs like that. I did like that it regularly cleaned out junk files and fixed registry and broken shortcuts, I admit. I could clean out Temp files more often...

As far as undoing the damage from those programs, they've been running constantly since January. It fixed files constantly. I can't undo those changes without a major headache. Solving BSODs pushed that issue to the background.
Since its installation is almost simultaneous to Win10 upgrade, I figured I would reset (or refresh) if I had to.
Do you still think I need to reverse my system - if that's (system) what was affected? By the way, I ran a diagnostic tool for Iobit, after a particular cleanup tool deleted more than anticipated and another minor cosmetic thing. It was so thorough, I felt I was sharing too much considering the scope of my complaint, which was immediate and SMALL. If that diagnostic is of value to you, I could dig it out of Recycle Bin.

I installed the May Cumulative Updates last night. Easy breezy!

    An important error to note.
Could this be my external drive? I saw drive errors on Event Viewer when I was regularly checking, but in the next day or two, drive errors were not detected. Don't you degrade the drive every time you run scans? What is a paging operation? Could it be something like when I attempt to run Backup & Restore, it doesn't see my external drive immediately?

I will run this check after I run SFC for you. I've been reading election results ALL afternoon.

I quickly scanned the Permissions link, which is excellent. This time of day it's often impossible for me to muddle through technical instructions, so I don't. I will though, ask the obvious - As I own the device and I am the only user, other than me having the ability to (handily) screw up my own computer, what are the proper settings? Do I need to worry about anything? This still won't help me with Notepad. I didn't know to keep the Admin account user always activated for easy access. What a concept!

I didn't set up Win10, Anthony did. Do you still want to have a conversation with him?
Does software come with certain inarguable - or inherent - permissions? I don't understand "inherited" permissions and were they passed on in the upgrade or created from scratch?

I could greatly benefit from understanding where on my system the real power lies to change permissions. If anything happens, I grant too much, not too little. Fixing permissions is on my list of things to do when I'm ready to deal with the installation and cleanup of Win10.

    Thank you.

After I see your answer, I'll run this. I don't see a way to delete documents in my attachments file. It says it deletes them if not used, so am I viewing the image of my attachments and not actually taking up space?
