In command prompt you can open msconfig, in msconfig you can choose to boot into safe mode.
    Enter following command
    Code:
    start msconfig
In msconfig, go to the boot tab, select safe mode, click apply > ok and reboot.
i typed this is and I get "the system cannot find the file msconfig"

msconfig.exe is C:\Windows\System32\msconfig.exe so you could try entering C:\Windows\System32\msconfig.exe.

Hi. Wondering if you can help me.

    1) my computer won't boot, it just shows the Sony vaio logo and then crashes to a blue screen. Sometimes it says "preparing automatic repair" and then crashes.

    2) I can get into the bios and changed to boot from a external drive (I have a Windows 10 recovery in a usb) but it won't load. Just keeps showing the logo and then the blue menu screen.

    3) system restore doesn't work. Can't even do a repair (it says my drive is locked)

    4) I can't get into safe mode. The Windows boot manager only gives me the option of continuing to Windows 10 or a option for "Windows memory diagnostic" which comes up clean.

other than spening $100 bucks for geek squad to come to my house, do you have any suggestions?

This sounds a bit like a motherboard problem to me.
