Windows 10 1803 to 1903 Upgrade: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION BSOD

Hey guys,

I generally don't post on forums but I'm really out of ideas here, I feel like I've tried everything.

Everytime I want to update my current Windows 10 Home 1803 version to the newest 1903 version, it crashes to a BSOD with the error code SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, usually at around 80%. This happens both when updating from the internal Windows Update as well as trying with an external Windows Update assistant.

I don't have any third-party antivirus program currently installed, according to some forums, these can be a problem. I've also updated all my drivers and my BIOS, which are also frequently mentioned as possible sources of errors.

I'm really not an expert on these things as soon as you have to go meddling in firmware and stuff like that, so any possible suggestions please with detailed explanations

I really hope someone can help me with this because it has been super frustrating.

PS: I'm still on 1803 because for a long time, my Windows Update wasn't working at all until I figured out that a registry entry was missing and for me to figure that out and how to fix it, also took a long time...

Hi, have you been offered 1903 by Windows Update?
If not, your PC may not be compatible with it.

Before attempting any upgrade, it's safest to create a current disk image of Windows as it is now.
Then, should your PC become unbootable you have another way to restore it.
Macrium Reflect (free/paid) is often recommended here.

To avoid issues with Windows Update, if that's in fact the problem, try
- download a 1903 iso file
- log in
- perform a clean boot
- rt click the iso file
- click Mount (note mount will not be available if iso is associated with another program than explorer)
- open the new drive created
- double click setup.exe

To simplify this choose NOT to accept updates during the sequence.

If this fails, make an exact note of any failure message and post back. No guarantees of course.

So like I said, I'm a bit of a dummy so I didn't really get your instructions. What do you mean exactly by "logging in" in regards to an .iso file? And what's a clean boot? And which new drive?

Anyway, I tried downloading an .iso file and running the setup.exe within, got an immediate BSOD with the same SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION message.

But yeah, 1903 has been offered by Windows Update and the Update assistant has previously separately checked the compatibility and said there was no problem, so in theory, on that front, I should be ok.

Oh and in reply to MrPepka, like I said, I don't have a third-party antivirus program, although I did use to have Avast. Uninstalled it a while ago though.

1) The logs were in a foreign language and could not be scanned or read.

2) Please change the default language to English so that all logs can be scanned and read during the troubleshooting process.

3) Upload each V2 and DM into this thread.

4) If Driver Booster or any third party software that can modify or install drivers is installed or was recently uninstalled: uninstall the software and all drivers installed with this software.
If it is not possible to identify the drivers perform either:
a) a system restore to a date before the installation of the software
b) reinstall all drivers displayed on the computer or motherboard manufacturer's website

5) When uninstalling antivirus software always use the applicable uninstall tool.
Using control panel can leave residual files in the registry.

6) Uninstall Avast using the applicable uninstall tool:
Avast Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for Avast Removal

7) download and install: Everything
voidtools

8) search for this file: Setupmem.dmp

Yeah I kinda can't believe this but it seems it actually was some sort of residul shit from Avast that was causing the problems because after I ran the Uninstall Utility, the update worked, no problem...

I can't believe this effing antivirus program gave me such headaches especially after I repeatedly checked that I actually had completely removed it...

But anyway, that did the trick, so thank you guys so much

You are welcome.

If you have made a backup image it can come in handy for:
a) malware
b) ransomware
c) boot failure
d) registry or operating system corruption
e) drive failure

There are free and pay versions depending on the features.
(Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, Macrium, Paragon, etc.)

Some of the log files did not appear in the V2 log collector results.
The versions have been updated.
