With everything I have read that you already have done, it looks to me more like the motherboard.
But the only way to test the motherboard is by replacing it.
A good way to get an indication of the motherboard being the cause without replacing is safe mode.
If it truly was the motherboard it wouldn't be so inconsistent. I've had bad motherboards before: they either worked or just refused to work.
Besides, my Archlinux install never had any problems, not even freezes (with good ram anyway)
