windows.old is the old files left over after you upgraded to windows 10, the first thing I do when upgrading an OS is delete these....wasn't easy with windows 10.....had to research it and use windows cleanup and eventually it had the option to delete windows old.....I would say you don't need windows.old but it should just be a folder.....do you have any data you need to get off. is it just programs apps etc.....if you want to get any data music pictures or docs use the Linux live Cd and run as live DO NOT INSTALL and back up all your data, might be a good time to do this.....if you have nothing of importance and can reinstall any apps then chose to delete windows.old.....you have to be a rocket scientist to work with windows nowadays....
Thank you for this post but windows is now working for me. I'm guessing the bootrec steps fixed it. Thank you very much reddwarf4ever. You have helped me immensely.

It was a mixture of experience and ( hate to say it ) but a bit of googling...( no doubt googling will end up in the Oxford dictionary...LOL......computers constantly present us mere mortals with seemingly impossible problems, but we win in the end.....just shows who's got the real brains......so very glad I could help....made me feel good to.....take care...PS if you can get hold of a 'copy' of Acronis true image, it is an amazing program to back up your entire HDD, programs and everything, even has a verify option...I use it to make an ' image' of my various pc's and laptop.......can you tick the thumbs up to give me some reputation if you are happy with my help

Hi, I have had the problem of being stuck on a blue screen twice, I have windows 10 on an ASUS X550C laptop. I resolved the problem by shutting the pc down with the power button, removing the battery pack and restarting. On both occasions the pc then undertakes a software update and then it runs as normal.
