Now half the videos on youtube are just BLACK EMPTY SPACE

Honestly, I really do wish that Windows 10 would stop doing all these updates and 'fixing' everything and making it 'improved'.

Every time they do this, something else goes wrong. This time around, now half the videos on youtube are just black with no picture, just sound.

    Some play, others don't.

And I dont know what to do about it.

    It is very frustrating.

    Agreed.

However it may be a network/YouTube problem.

I tried to watch a "Health & Safety" video the other day (in W7) and it wasn't working, but other people in my TAFE class said they could see it.
I haven't got around to starting my VM, which has 6 different browsers installed, to see if one of them can show it.

Perhaps it is a "W10 vs browser" issue (i.e. maybe some change in W10 corrupted/"upset" your browser).

    Which browser are you using?
Can you try another browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, etc.)?

But even my Natwest account, when I go to log in, it isn't working either . If I go to Internet explorer it works, and so do the videos.

I tried redownloading google chrome and even tried reinstalling windows 10 but still, the videos are black. Like about half of them.

This problem was just discussed here>No Video But audio on most internet videos

I have same problem in Chrome. Some videos are black with sound. I tried same video in Edge and it worked ok.
I have not tried the solution yet.

Hey thanks so much. I tried the solution there and it actually worked! It was the acceleration thing that was causing it. I really do widh I understood what that mean though.

Hardware Acceleration used to be responsible for a lot of weird issues in Firefox.

Does 'Hardware Acceleration' just mean the video goes without anyone or anything telling it to? Like as in you don't even push the start button, but it starts up on its own?

Not only was the screen black, but like, on Facebook, as I would go scrolling down the screen, every single person's post with a video ---it would start for a mere second where you could see the video start to play, but then it turned black and be like black rectangles, almost like a cross, with one verticle and the other horizontal.

But now that's fixed. Really weird!

...and to think that I did a complete System Restore for no reason, when all I had to do is turn off the hardware acceleration thing. I really don't understand then, why they even have that feature available, if all it does is mess everything up on your computer.

    Autoplay

I guess the Hardware Acceleration option only works correctly on certain hardware/software combinations.

On my PC, Hardware Acceleration made scrolling jerky (a few years ago).

I occasionally turn it on to see if it has improved.
It doesn't cause jerky scrolling anymore, but it doesn't seem to improve anything either.

In HTML5, "autoplay" is an "Optional Attribute" for the "video" tag.
    https://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_video.asp

I suspect a lot of pages are coded using the "autoplay" option.
I find "autoplay" annoying as I often click on multiple links and then videos start playing and I have to hunt down which tabs are responsible.

It's possible to disable autoplay and restore click to play in Firefox Quantum.

In about:config preferences locate and set these:

    media.autoplay.enabled false
    media.block-autoplay-until-in-foreground true

That takes care of HTML5 autoplay

For flash videos get the flashblock plus addon. Versions for Firefox and Chrome available.
