    Strange symbols apperaing in emails.

Last 2 weeks I have been seeing strange symbols in my emails. I have been searching all over and can't find this problem duplicated or a fix for it. They look fine when I write the email and send it. But if I'm replying back and forth to a person with emails then the strange symbols show up. Does this make sense? keyboard is eng us. They look fine when writing and sending them. Just when they come back in a reply email they have the weird lettering.
Please help , thanks to all that reply I'm not very computer friendly

    below is a example

I apologize if your seeing weird letters or symbols in my emails.  My latest windows 10 problem I can’t seem to fix

I tested it and it seems fine. Used a volt meter at the sockets 124 volts was read, plugged a 12 amp vacuum into to it and it ran fine. When the bolt finally backed out all the way except for a few threads and pressed against the rotor. It just wouldn’t let me pull the cord to start it. Once home I used a big socket wrench for more leverage than the pull cord  to turn the motor and that’s when the grinding noise was heard and tracked the noise  down to the bolt. Repair was just removing the bolt.

Hello bull and welcome to Ten Forums. Sorry for the delayed response.

I think what you're experiencing has to do with something called "character encoding". It's how a typed character (like a letter, number or punctuation mark) is processed in a computer generated document (like an email, Word document, etc.) It's kinda geeky but this article should help explain it.

Thanks, It explains why it happens but doesn't really tell me how to fix it. I'm using windows 10 but it's my shaw email account that seems to have the problem. My shaw email is sent to the mail app, so would I try fixing the utf-8 at my shaw account?

I would say it's your Shaw email account that's having issues. But rather than trying to change Shaw settings and risk making things worse, I'd contact the Shaw help desk or customer service, outline the issue, and see if they have a fix in place. Perhaps they recently did a system upgrade or patched something which is now causing your issues.

I did find one old reference involving Windows 8 that seems slightly similar to your problem. Maybe the techs at Shaw could use this as a starting point. I apologize for not being more help.

Well spent hrs with Shaw thought we had it fixed lasted a few emails and its back. If i send email from Shaw's site I don't get weird letters appearing. But I get the weird letters using Shaw and now Outlook from the mail app in Windows 10. Ended up deleting the mail app but when I went to reinstall it it said not possible til I upgrade to windows 10. It's a Brand new computer with windows 10 and all updates done so I had to uninstall windows 10 and reload it to get the mail app back. The strange letters are back but different this time apostrophes come out as a with a upside down v above it and 2 question marks. Won’t can’r AAAA…… this was just copied from a test email and pasted but the question marks are missing. It's suspose to say won't , can't AAAA...

loosing my mind trying to fix this,

wtf The e tm symbol was 2 question marks and a with upside v above it when I copied and pasted the test email but then changed to e tm after I hit reply. Those strange symbols are taking place of my apostrophe's.
    Does this make sense?

I think I'd try some investigative troubleshooting. For example, if you can, create another email account with Shaw. If problem disappears it's one more piece of info you can relay to Shaw. If problem remains create an email account by using a different email application like Mozilla Thunderbird. If problem disappears with Thunderbird then it would probably point to a compatibility issue between Windows 10/Outlook and Shaw. I know it's frustrating but a problem like this might require a lot or trial and error using various combinations of the puzzle.

    Strange Symbols appearing in Emails

I realize this thread is by now somewhat old but I felt that I had to post as I have the identical problem........we even share the same ISP .... ( Shaw Internet ) I recently bought a new Dell desktop which was loaded at the factory with Windows 10 Home. The problem with the encoded characters turning up in my emails started the same day that I reinstalled my Email account. I have reset the pc back to the factory image several times thinking it was some software that I installed but even running nothing else other than my Email account the symbols continue to haunt my Emails.

I have a call into Shaw but after reading the past posts I'm really not expecting much. Has anyone else come across this problem?
