There's clearly a major problem at the moment - I and many others are sending emails which then vanish. There's been no formal announcement from Microsoft, nor in their Forum, yet no problems are showing in Service Status.
Has anyone heard what's happening?

Looks like they do have a problem, I'm seeing the same mail appears as sent but doesn't arrive at the destination address.
Thanks for the update, this is the reason I stopped using their hotmail, live, email back then.
It seems, that it is still the thing, so much for the "reliable" email. Better to look elsewhere.
What really makes me mad is that Microsoft won't even discuss it. Disgraceful customer service.
Have they had a major Denial of Access attack? Isn't there a website where we can check such things?
I posted a moan in their Performance Issues thread today - I knew it wasn't the correct place but I wanted to tell as many as I could. They removed it.

Their Service status link now shows they've a problem with outlook and that they're working on it.
It's only the outlook.com website that's having the issue. I can send/receive email using my hotmail account via email client Thunderbird without issue.
Microsoft has at last found the problem and has resolved it. My emails that disappeared into the ether are now flooding back into my Inbox.
They could have handled the PR to us, the customers, far better though.
