I signed up for a phone call from MS Support. It told me the wait was 270 mins so I set my alarm About midnight Omar called to help. He grabbed my screen and took off. MSCONFIG went to check updates and there was a critical update on the day that my email changed to 'lock.' I thought he was going to recover before the update - that might be a problem too - but, no, he then went to Services and unchecked a bunch of modules. Too fast for me to keep up. He assessed my problem as the Start process was so slow that the Mail screen couldn't come up until all conflicts in Start were resolved. So, if I had waited, possibly forever, the Mail screen may have finally showed up??? He said Yes.
I asked him how all the Start modules got checked in the first place. He didn't know. And, why did the Mail screen come up fine for three days, and then after a critical update there was a problem. He didn't know. He was nice but assured me that his job is to fix things not be a detective. OK. For now Mail is coming up quickly and is working but I don't necessarily buy the fix. I try not to overload my system with add-ons, apps and programs I don't need or use so how Start got overwhelmed I don't know.
Now, I'm tracking through everything installed as when I tried to start iTunes I found that he had unchecked Bonjour, which is needed to run iTunes.
I hope this helps some of you with this problem. At least check your Services to ensure you have only the modules you want.

what was Support #
There isn't a number because you start by signing into your MS account, which has your phone number in it. Then you go to the Microsoft Windows 10 webpage. Use Support for Email and Communications. Go to the Answer Desk and click on 'Call me as soon as possible.' For me, when I did this, the message said they would call me in 270 minutes. It was more like 300 mins when my phone rang. Then, I was on hold for another 30 mins before the tech helper came on the phone. Working with him took at least 20 mins so have your phone and computer charged.
