Do I Have to Stop Using Internet Explorer? How do I change it?

I am running Windows 10 Home - Version 1803 and Internet Explorer 11 on my Dell XPS desktop computer. I am getting messages from websites that they do not want me to use IE.

I have been using Internet Explorer since forever. Firefox seems to be the preferred browser. I have no idea how I would change to Firefox.

For email, I use Outlook from Office 365 and also Yahoo email. I have 360 Favorites and many icon shortcuts to websites on my desktop and in folders.

I am feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of changing and have no idea how to start.
    Thanks, cb

Don't abandon IE completely. There are a number of major corporate web sites that reject Edge, and only work with IE.

Some websites require JAVA for applications.
Some browsers do not allow JAVA.

What you may be looking for is software to copy bookmarks.
This software can be used in case you may want to clean install.
Alternatively, you can download and install multiple browsers and use the browser menu to import bookmarks.

I can understand your attachment to IE, it was always my favorite too. But I'm surprised you have never even tried another browser.

'Changing' to another browser isn't difficult, in fact don't think of it as having to change, rather you can install another browser along side IE and start using it in addition to IE. Or you could try Edge along side IE without even needing to install anything, the Edge browser is built into Windows 10. Personally I use Edge, IE and Firefox, Over time I have come to use Firefox as my main browser, but there are still times (and particular sites) where one of the others is the better choice.

That is a web designer problem, not browser. Edge has a IE mode. “On the EDGE browser, click on(…) button on the top right corner and select Open with Internet Explorer. This will help you to access the websites.”

But, when you do that, you simply open a separate instance of IE, with that URL passed in. All of your Edge extensions, add-ons, etc. are not available, and you'll have to re-login to whatever site you're on -- login credentials aren't passed between the 2 programs.

Agree that this is a web design problem. Unfortunately, some web designers or admins outright refuse to modify their systems to accommodate Edge as well as they handle Chrome &/or Firefox -- even when they're advised directly that MS won't have IE present in a future WaaS 10 update. What about the large installations where their desktops are locked, and the only browsers available are those within the OS (Edge/Chromium Edge & IE)? They're SOL!

That is correct. Even in the new version of Edge, which is based on Chromium, the IE mode does not have access to the extensions. That is because they have never been compatible with IE. IE is going away. The Chromium based Edge will have code for IE compatibility, until web designers move away and update their code to no longer be coded just for IE. Government Enterprise is the worse when dealing with outdated coding and web based design.

Microsoft security chief: IE is not a browser, so stop using it as your default
Is Internet Explorer (IE) a browser? According to Microsoft, no. Today, it's a 'compatibility solution' for enterprise customers to deal with legacy sites that should be updated for modern browsers.
