Was my main emailclient too when I used Vista and W7, but on W8 I replaced it with eM Client:

eM Client | Best Email Client for Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP
Installed it yesterday and it looks good.
Its very close to WinMail and the import functions work very well.
    Also no errors so far.

Seems I have a new mail client.. R.I.P WinMail

    Thanks for the link.. :)

Simple cure, just replace the Windows Mail folders with original Vista ones and the shortcut once again works.

Peter, I gave you a "thumbs up" for your Excellent and concise post--I wanted to post a thank you to you (Ex_Brit) and endeavor for this solution. I'm only registered at tenforum and not at eightforum; so, I had no way of complimenting endeavor other than here with your great link to his solution. Thank you!! (Chase)

When it comes to installing WinMail, the files attached in this thread in one way or the other come from the source anyway, and so when installing WinMail, one might just as well just go to the source :
Instructions on how to install WinMail to Windows 8 or 10

(if necessary Advanced users can just scroll down to that section)

    ps,
resi1972, good job with your post # 16 to be of help

    Compacting Winmail

Since upgrading to Win10 and getting my WinMail to run, I have been unable to get the application to compact my mail. I can go in and set the Compact settings to compact after 1 run, but after exiting the advanced options mode and closing the tools, the settings appear to revert back to 20 runs.

Does anyone know where that data is actually stored? Is it in the registry or in a file somewhere?

    Thanks

p.s. one of the recent builds did break WinMail and had to go through the copying of saved files once again

Hmmm, I never noticed that before.
I see Windows 8 is set to default 100 but won't stay if I set it lower after clicking apply.
I will have to check it out more thoroughly on Windows 8 and 10 at another time when I have more time, and if true will add it to the WinMail bugs list on the WinMail page.

fwiw, there is Absolutely no reason to compact messages less than that anyway!

Reinstating WinMail on any OS other than what it was intended for is not perfect, and certainly has some bugs. Only dedicated WinMail and/or expert users should even bother with it, seriously.

To your other question, all mail data is stored within:
''C:\Users\<yourname>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail'' ...and within multiple folders there depending on your WinMail folder setup structure, and within the 'WindowsMail.MSMessageStore' file, but do yourself a favor, only expert users should even attempt to manipulate any files there.

As to your PS, that is a known, and has been explained already on the main WinMail link I gave above, or below.

Instructions on how to reinstate WinMail on Windows 8 or 10

(for diehard WinMail or expert users only! ...otherwise move onward to supported email clients)

    Edit:
To manually compact if your WinMail client bug won't let you, then use this little program to manually compact it for you: Windows Mail Utilities
