    You could use FreeFileSync with the externals by having Task Scheduler fire off the FreeFileSync file on the months you need it. Or a batch file can be fired off with Task Scheduler dictating which FreeFileSync file backs up and at what time.

    I use FreeFileSync right now for such a task.

    I physically disconnect them for "off" months since infections can reach anything that is plugged in.
