It seems your other application is screwing up the shadow copy process. You could use the free version of Revo Uninstaller to check for remnants after uninstallation, although I've bought the Pro version for my PCs since it is so useful. I hate backup programs like this which are hard to remove - Acronis is another offender.
If there is a problem related to VSS, imaging from Windows won´t help, since VSS is also used for creating online images. To "bypass" VSS, work from a Macrium boot UFD.
