Using File History with Intermittent Connection on Laptop

I sometimes go a day or 2 without turning on my laptop or having an external USB connected. As a result, if i used the new windows 10 File History backup, windows starts backing up everything to %APPDATA%, so I end up with a giant bloat of copies of my own stuff. File History I think is limited to backing up every 12 hours or something at most

Is there any way of getting File History not to do this and just wait until I attach the USB drive?

That would defeat the purpose of file history, with file hystory you can revert back to a previous copy of e.g. a deleted or wrongly mofified document; i do not think that anyway it creates more than one copy for each unique file, as a mitigation you can set it to backup once a day.

    HTH.

@PencilBoy99, does your router have a usb socket? Mine does, and I have a usb external HDD plugged into it. My router makes this drive available as a network share and that's where I have pointed my File History to. That way as long as I'm on my home network the history drive is always available.
