Using Windows Defender and System Mechanic in Windows 10

    Windows 10
I purchased System Mechanic not knowing about Windows Defender. I have both running. Should I use both or just one? If just one which should I use? I assume I can turn off Windows Defender and or delete System Mechanic. Btw, I am inexperienced.

    Thank you.

Hi, the standard spiel is not to run 2 AV's at the same time as I'm sure you know.

From around 2014 MS designed Defender so it is 'compatible' with other major vendors' products. That is, you will probably find Defender is disabled when installing another AV, but it is still present and can be used in a limited sense. Discussion here (2nd section):

I guess you have a version of System Mechanic with AV - apparently it uses 2 AV engines - I couldn't find which from a quick search.

I'd just pick one and since you purchased System Mechanic I'd side with that for now. I would also augment your security with Malwarebytes (free so not resident) and SuperAntSpyware (free). You can run these programs regularly to scan your system for malware and malicious cookies respectively.

It seems Mechanic performs more tasks such as removing junk files, etc. than Defendar but if Mechanic is a risk It will be deleted.. Is there a resident app already on W10 to do such tasks?

Disk Cleanup and select Cleanup System Files.
