    McAfee Cloud AV

I just found out about a new Free AV from Intel Security(McAfee), in case someone is interested:

    McAfee® Cloud AV

    Introducing

    McAfee® Cloud AV

    Limited Release

We're redefining what antivirus should be.
    Fast. Powerful. 100% free.

    Note   Note

    System Requirements:

    • Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10, 8.1, 8 and 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
    • 1 GB Ram, 100MB storage
    • High-speed internet connection recommended

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is it McAfee® Cloud AV?
McAfee® Cloud AV is a tiny app with the power to protect your whole PC from viruses, malware, and spyware. It works quietly and stays out of your way. We’ll only send important notifications, and won’t ambush you with surprise scans.

How is McAfee® Cloud AV so small?
McAfee® Cloud AV protects your computer from the cloud, so only a tiny file needs to be on your computer. How small is it? It only takes up 60MB on your computer — 75% less than other antivirus apps. That’s small!

What makes McAfee® Cloud AV different from other antiviruses?
Most antivirus solutions use blacklisting, which requires a suspicious file be identified by name before it stops them. This process is difficult, and leaves you exposed to viruses that are brand new. Instead, McAfee® Cloud AV looks at the behavior of files to determine if they’re malware. Suspicious activity triggers a stop for both known and unknown culprits — simply acting like malware sets McAfee® Cloud AV into action.

    McAfee® WebAdvisor + Antivirus
In addition to the virus protection leveraged via cloud-based behavioral detection, McAfee® WebAdvisor reduces your chances of being infected by warning you when you try to visit a web page known to distribute malware. This combined detection gives you world class protection.

    About McAfee

McAfee has offered award-winning antivirus for decades — in fact, we’ve been doing it longer than anyone else. McAfee® Cloud AV takes a new approach to fighting malware by using the cloud. With its lean, powerful build, McAfee® Cloud AV is our smallest full power antivirus yet.

    You're welcome @eLPuSHeR
I found out about it over at Malwarebytes Forums, and thought that maybe someone here would be interested.
I'm pretty much a sworn Windows Defender user, which is enough for my habits(for questionable or unknown sites, I always have my virtual machines)

Well. I have just installed it.

These are my impressions so far.

    PROs:
    - Very lightweight. It uses almost no cpu cycles and 10MB- memory.

    CONs:
    - It seems to be at a very basic state. There's almost nothing to configure.
    - Very spartan layout/interface. It resembles Windows Defender a lot. Unfortunately some of the typographic fonts used are too small and not easily read.
    - No context entry for right-click menu -> Scan with...
    - No custom scans either. When you click on the SCAN vutton, it starts scanning without allowing the user what to scan.

Right now I am using it as main real-time scanner with WD enabled too for periodic scans (second opinion).

I will now test running Steam, some other apps and games to see how it behaves.

Truthfully with an AV, you only need to thoroughly scan at the initial install, after that, the real time protection "should" keep you safe.
This is why there are malware scanners, for the second opinion and to check for things an AV might not protect against.
But also Windows has other protections than Defender, that runs alongside any AV, such as Smart Screen.

Well. I have been running it for a while but I have seen some noticeable slowdowns when launching certain applications. I will keep it under my radar, but I have returned to good ole' WD for now. I would like to know how this AV would perform under some modest pc, even under a single core processor. It could be a good candidate for old or not-so-hefty hardware.

    Hello people.

I tried this tiny AV for the second time and I have found a major issue for me in it. It detected and moved to quarantine a legit software (false positive), but although I could restore it from quarantine, it got deleted again everytime I launched it. I wasn't able to find any "whitelist" option.

Well that doesn't sound good for the user. It's a pain to have to send the AV developer and/or the "offending" software dev an email and warn them. No not good at all, specially when it's something you use often.
