It's the only way to restore from your current backup. Plus other situations where fixing other problems in the future would require it. It's not just the Macrium. It's also for any fixes, if needed, that cannot be done while the system is running. When you boot from a thumb drive, Macrium or anything else, you are running separate from the OS on the C drive. It's just a good thing to know how to do, if needed.
OK, then if you think it's important - let's do it! Though I must say I feel nervous playing around with things I don't understand and am afraid I do something to damage my machine.

Ok Lizzy...one last try at something before I ask for this to be moved.
Unplug all the extra stuff.
Completely shutdown the machine, total power off.
Plug in the thumb drive.
Hold the "Volume Control" button DOWN position. Hold it in the DOWN position, don't let go.
Press and HOLD the power on switch.
Hold everything until something boots.
If it's Macrium, fine. Close it out and the system will reboot.

OK, nothing happened.
I have 3 volume control keys - f10=off: f11=volume down: f12=volume up.
I did as you said and used the f12 and power key but it started in the usual way.
If I should have used one of the other volume keys, let me know. I used f12 cause to get to the bios screen it's f12 and power but only after closing down with shift+power off.
