I use Avast Internet Security and have been for the last 5 years. I had an issue yesterday that made me contact support. Now I was told that the support on AIS is free. The only problem I had was I could not log in to my account. The support person I talked to knew less about the product than I do. He wanted to get into my PC to fix this and informed me that it would cost $179.00. He also bad mouthed Windows 10 and said that while he was in my PC that he would remove the windows firewall and defender. I told him that there was no way I would let you or any other incompetent tech in my PC or anyone for that matter.
I resolved the issue myself this morning and posted on Avast's forum about it as I thought this guy was a fake. I found out that Avast uses third party vendors for Phone support. So then when my subscription runs out, I am done with Avast AIS free or any version. That guy would have no business fooling with anything else besides the product he supposedly supports.
Geez if Avast free has gone to the dogs what free security is safe.

They do in fact use a third party vednor for phone support so at least it was not a fake. I fixed it myself.

    I am running W10 + Defender.

What can the free version Avast do for me that Defender cannot?

Looks like Avira is better than Avast according to that page.

Looks like anything is better than Defender.
I know MS are working on Defender; perhaps it will jump up in the list in the future...

Interesting that in February Avast was listed first under protection, but by June they're down to 13th o_O

    What gives?

Company apathy? Maybe Avast are becoming lazy and complacent? So others outperform then now.

I've actually changed my mind... I am sticking with MS Defender, and every few days I am running the Emsisoft Emergency Kit Scanner.
