I am doing just that on my main machine, but on my wife's machine, she doesn't like to have to worry about security concerns. she has enough on her mind. So I prefer to have a AV program that will do the hard thinking, just in case she doesn't.
Ok, but hope you understand NO AV program will protect anyone 100% The user has to be responsible for their own Web activity to a certain extent. No firewall will either, not 100% that is. You have many choices to choose from. Some are better than others. Wish you nothing but the best. :)

Eset smart security says it is working properly, and windows security center says both are turned on.
what to do? Leave it that way? If not, how to turn off defender?

Hi. ESET is an excellent program and @Lesmi provided a good link for you. Mike is right - there are options to allow programs, so you should be able to allow the Mario game.

I don't know why the OP is having problems with Eset Smart Security. I run it on three Windows 10 computers without any problems. This thread was started in February so I hope the OP has solved their problem. :)

Eset is a much better protector than windows defender. Think of all the glitches and bugs Windows 10 experiences, where as Eset works on one thing only... protection. That said where I work there is about 1000++ computers that are protected with Eset. This was done by a very competent IT staff and research. As posted above, nothing is 100%, but I believe Eset is a leader.

I have Eset and it will catch things Defender misses, and it runs flawlessly. I tried this against my other pc.

Windows 10 is so glitchy... my laptop may boot right up some times other times it black screens and I have to hard boot it and it plays the Win 7 song, often it run hotter and slower (vents blown clean often), some forum sites stall when entering user name or password, some don't...... Just more reasons to use a site dedicated to one thing

Eset will turn off defender as that is the way it shows in my control panel...... though in settings it shows it as on, but the slide switch is gray instead of blue in color, but says on. see attachments

    My 2 cents worth
