Windows Defender inexplicitly turns itself off

Windows Defemder will intermittently fail to start after my HP laptop awakes from sleep mode. This does not occur every time. When it does occur, I get a message that Windows Defender is turned off and I need to turn it on again. When I attempt to turn it on, it eventually times out. I must then reboot the laptop. After rebooting, Windows Defender does not automatically turn on. However, I am able to turn it on manually. What's up?

The following 3rd party AVs are known to turn off Windows Defender. It is because they have their own defenders. To have 2 defenders running in the same machine will create conflicts, not to mention redundancy.

Do you have one of the below installed ?
    Avast
    AVG
    Norton
    McAfee

Thanks for responding. I do not use, or have installed, any other AV programs. Windows Defender is my only AV program.

I am afraid I cannot help you any further.
    Sorry.
Please wait a bit for some one to come along.
    Thank you.

It wouldn't hurt to run a SFC to see if there's something that might need fixing. Option 3 is the recommended one to use.

SFC Command - Run in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Another option you can use to see if any files need fixed:

DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Windows 10 Forums

Something else you may want to try. Turn off Defender, reboot, restart Defender & then reboot again. Sometimes turning a program off/back on again fixes the problem.
